Top-rated things to do in Oxford

Unique activities hosted by local experts vetted for quality

  • Oxford University Tour With Alumni
We will start with a whirlwind overview of Oxford as the central player in 1,000 years of British history, and giving guests an understanding of how the sprawling institution operates before embarking on the tour. Navigating down the windy alleyways we will get an insiders take on the little known viewing angles that bring across the drama of the world famous architecture in this city. With striking spires and imposing buildings, we will cover how these influenced Tolkien, C S Lewis, along with Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. We will enter one of the oldest Colleges at Oxford, renowned for its beautiful gardens, before heading into one of the most famous Library's in the world - responsible for over 13 million books. Capping this off we will cover a Harry Potter film site, along with why the most powerful religious figure England has ever seen, was burnt alive in the centre of Oxford, on what is now such a nondescript part of road you could easily miss it. Please note: Colleges and the Library can shut without notice and currently they are available as of August 2021. If this changes on the day we will of course incorporate them - if we are not able to offer any access, we will offer up the option of a full refund.

  • Oxford city walking tour with a local
A small-group walking tour is the best way to see Oxford, a vibrant city steeped in history with amazing architecture & the prestigious Oxford University. Enjoy a relaxed & informative tour any time of the year come rain or shine with a small group of people. You will see Oxford's most famous sites, discover parts of the city that many visitors don't see, see inside a college (*), hear about Oxford's literary greats & visit Harry Potter film locations. Along the route, you will see ancient buildings, colleges, theatres, libraries, a market, gardens and a tranquil river. We visit a Gelateria for award-winning gelato or the best hot chocolate, then later an ancient pub to cool down in the summer & warm up in the winter! Most Oxford tours are with large groups lasting just 90 minutes, whereas guests who have taken this small group, 2.5-hour tour, love its intimate & relaxed nature, plus they enjoy meeting fellow travellers from the Airbnb community - I hope you do as well. Come as a stranger, leave as a friend! If you are not an Airbnb member, contact me via myoxfordtravel. During the current COVID-19 UK restrictions the health and well-being of my guests is extremely important, so measures such as face masks, hand sanitisation, group size limited to 10 and keeping to quieter areas will be applied. • Oxford of Morse, Lewis and Endeavour
We'll meet in the heart of the city where so many of the episodes of 'Morse', 'Lewis' and 'Endeavour' were filmed. In a small group, of no more than six people, you will see iconic university buildings, such as the Radcliffe Camera and Sheldonian Theatre, which you'll immediately recognise from the TV series. We'll see where that famous red Jag was driven, the pub where Lewis and Laura finally exchanged their first kiss, the place where Endeavour alighted from the bus that had brought him back to Oxford and the spots where Thursday ate his sandwiches. Is it cheese and pickle today? You'll hear about the stories, the people and the places behind the filming and about Dexter's own Oxford life.

  • Oxford's famous and hidden gems
Oxford’s city centre is a concentration of all you want to know. Within a relatively small area there are hundreds of years of history which we will be experiencing by walking for a couple of hours. We will tour the famous sights and learn about the culture, reasons and history behind what we see. We will hear about the famous Oxford personalities, who shaped the world and learn about their world. We will also discover more hidden places, the ones tourists (and many locals) don’t know about. I will point out the locations of world famous films and the stunning hidden architecture. This is a tour for very small groups as I want you to feel comfortable and able to ask questions. If there is any particular requirement, just ask and I will do my utter best to accommodate you. Most of the times, it would be your own private tour. We will meet outside the Randolph Hotel, on Beaumont Street, opposite the Ashmolean Museum and start our adventure from there. Other things to note My tours are suitable for families and children under 10 come for free. We will be passing many shops during our walk where you can buy drinks and snacks if needed. This tour is wheelchair and child friendly. As the group size is very small you will almost certainly enjoy a fully private tour.
