How smart lock codes are shared with guests

Say goodbye to manually generating and sharing lock codes for every guest and hello to smoother check-ins. Codes are automatically shared and are easy for guests to find in their email, Airbnb messages, and Airbnb trip guide.

When smart lock codes are shared with guests

Once you’ve connected your smart lock to Airbnb, your guests for new bookings will receive a unique 4-digit code that’s automatically generated and shared when their booking is confirmed.

For any bookings that were confirmed before you connected your smart lock to Airbnb, your guests will receive a code—along with info that their check-in method was updated—as soon as you add a connected smart lock to your listing. Learn more about what happens to existing bookings when you connect your lock to Airbnb.

Rest assured: Codes are shared with your guests before check-in, but they only become active at their check-in time and expire at the end of their trip.

How guests get their smart lock code

Guests’ codes are sent to them in their Airbnb confirmation email at the time of booking and if applicable, in their reminder emails 8 days and 2 days before their trip. If they’ve opted to receive SMS or push notifications, we’ll send them a notification on the day of check-in.

Their code is always shown on their Airbnb trip guide, alongside your place’s address and check-in and checkout times. The guest’s trip guide includes a graphic of your lock model’s keypad to show them exactly how to use their code to unlock it.

If there are co-travelers on the booking

If the guest who booked adds any co-travelers to their reservation, the same door code is also shared with the co-travelers. Co-travelers will be shown the code in their Airbnb trip guide, and they’ll receive the code in their reminder emails 8 days and 48 hours before their trip, if applicable.

If you want to share smart lock codes with your guests

You’re always welcome to share your guest’s code with them in the Airbnb message thread or through other forms of communication.

When messaging on Airbnb, it’s simple to share your guest’s code without having to manually add it. You can just add the “entry code” shortcode to your scheduled messages or quick reply templates so that the smart lock code is dynamically filled in.

If you’d like to share your guest’s code manually in the message thread or in other communications, you can find out how to find their smart lock code.

Connecting your smart lock to Airbnb is only available to certain Hosts with listings in the US or Canada. Find out more about which Hosts are eligible to connect a smart lock to Airbnb.
