19 packing tips to get the whole family vacation-ready

March 15, 2024 • 4 min read
While we typically can’t wait for a vacation to start, why do we always put off packing until the last minute? Packing well –– especially when it’s for yourself and your kids –– can truly make or break the trip. But what stuff do you really need? What should you pack for the plane? And how much stuff is too much? Check out our best packing tips below.

Points of interest

  • Packing cubes and mix n’ match outfits can save on suitcase space

Getting organized

Everyone knows that you should make a list before you start packing, especially for a big family trip, but what’s most important to put on it? Packing needs vary based on who you’re traveling with and where you’re headed, but always consider having these essentials on on hand.
  • Layers. Choose lightweight clothing items that are hard to wrinkle and easy to pack and can be layered for colder or warmer days. Don’t forget to bring hats if you’ll be in the sun.

  • Entertainment and snacks. Pop some games, books, tablets, headphones and snacks in your carry-on bag to keep the kids entertained and avoid a meltdown on the plane.

  • Important travel documents. Be sure to back up physical documents like medical forms, identifications, and visas with digital versions, too.

  • Electronics and chargers. Your phone is only good as long as its battery lasts! Consider bringing a portable charger you can use when there aren’t any outlets around.

  • Feeding and sleep supplies. If you’re traveling with a baby or toddler, pack bottles, pumps, and any other equipment you need to feed them. Bringing packable paper blackout shades can be a life saver for light-sensitive sleepers. If you don’t want to pack your white noise machine, try downloading a white noise app on your phone.

  • Toiletries. Opt for a toiletry bag with multiple compartments and consider a separate one for the kids.

  • Diapers and wipes. Bring enough with you on the plane for 24 hours — this is one thing you definitely don’t want to run out of mid-trip.

  • First aid kit and medications. You can always reach out to your pediatrician beforehand to see if they have any recommendations on what to bring.

  • Travel stroller, car seat, and travel bag. Investing in some additional travel gear might be worth it if you will be taking multiple trips with small children. The travel stroller is much more portable than a full size one, and a bag for the car seat will make it easier to carry and protect it from damage en route.

Pro packing tip: Save suitcase space by choosing a vacation rental

Renting a home that offers a washer and dryer unit can help you cut down your packing list and minimize excess baggage fees.

Making it all fit

Remember when you could travel Europe for weeks living entirely out of a tiny duffle? Well, with kids, those days are long gone. Now you’ve got diaper bags, car seats, stuffed animals, a stroller, and the list goes on. It’s important to be strategic about what you are bringing with you and how best to pack it.
  • Use packing cubes. These fabric, zippable containers come in various sizes and shapes to organize your clothes and accessories. They’ll also help items fit better.

  • Mix and match. Pick similar styles and color schemes for everyone’s outfits and work with the pair or two of shoes you’re each bringing. This way, the whole family will always look put-together.

  • Keep sleepwear on top. If you’re arriving at bedtime, try stacking pajamas and toiletries on top of other clothes so you can quickly settle in and get some sleep.

  • Collaborate with the kids. Invite kids to help choose their own outfits and toys they’d like to bring along so they feel included in the process — and can’t complain about not having their favorite shirt or game.

Pro packing tip: Skip bringing what you can buy there

Save precious suitcase space by picking up extras you can easily find at a local grocery store or pharmacy such as sunscreen, toiletries, food, and extra diapers.

Preparing for the plane

We’ve got lots of travel hacks for flying with kids, but here are a few essential tips to keep in mind.
  • Pack formula or breast milk in clear plastic bottles. Breast milk or formula can exceed the standard 3.4oz liquid regulations according to the TSA’s website, so you can tote those right in your carry-on. Use clear, plastic bottles to make getting through security faster.

  • Get strategic with your personal item. Your personal item (which will go under the seat in front of you) is the perfect place to stash the things you’ll want to reach right away on your flight, like snacks, headphones, medications, wipes, and small books or toys. You can also have your kids bring their own mini roller suitcase of toys and snacks.

  • Make sure everyone is comfy. For longer flights, extra blankets and (neck) pillows can make a big difference.

Pro packing tip: Get free checked bags

One way to pick up a free checked bag is by opening an airline credit card with this perk. You can also check your carry-on at the gate if you’re on a busy flight.
We hope these tips will help you figure out what to bring and how to pack for your next big family adventure. Bon voyage!
