This portal was once one of the gates to the castle, with access to the ancient chapel with the same name, which was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. In medieval times, this was presumably the location of the City Hall, which was also partially destroyed, and where we can currently see the Azevedos coat-of-arms, former chief governors of the castle of Albufeira.
