Airbnb grant helps build affordable homes in Canada

Charlie has been a Host in the Prince Edward Island province of Canada for two years, but his commitment to the community started much earlier. He grew up building homes alongside his mother with the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity. Volunteering together and working with his hands left an indelible mark on him.
Today, Charlie continues his support for Habitat for Humanity New Brunswick to help local families build or enhance their own homes. Homeowners join in the construction process, working alongside volunteers. When the project is complete, they not only have a place to call home, but also benefit from an affordable mortgage.
“Witnessing the incredible impact Habitat had on families and communities inspired me, laying the foundation for me to recognize and support exceptional organizations like them,” he says.
Charlie, a Community Leader of the New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Host Club, nominated the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate for an Airbnb Community Fund donation. Host Club members have an opportunity each year to support their community through the Community Fund.
How Host Clubs are making an impact
Habitat for Humanity New Brunswick received a $75,000 USD donation from the Airbnb Community Fund to help complete 15 houses for families in the area.
“We will literally double the number of homes that we have built in about two years,” says Perry Kendall, CEO of Habitat for Humanity New Brunswick.
The impact of this donation and Habitat for Humanity’s work extends far beyond the physical structure of a home. Perry shares that securing a safe home has a ripple effect. Children’s education tends to improve, and parents often experience improvements in their job situations, according to Perry.
