Located downtown in the original Waikanae Post Office from 1907, the Kapiti Coast Museum focuses on the natural and cultural history surrounding the Kapiti region. Here you’ll find a collection of old photographs and admire exhibits showcasing tools, clothing, and other artifacts from throughout the years.

Hemi Matenga Scenic Reserve

The Hemi Matenga Scenic Reserve is located on the western edge of the Tararua Ranges, overlooking the town of Waikanae. As one of the largest areas of kohekohe forest remaining in the region, you can expect to see a variety of native plants and animals. There are numerous trails for varying hiking experience levels, each with their own scenic views. The Te Au Track will take you to the top of the reserve, where you can expect the best panoramic views of the wooded valleys and even the South Island in the distance.
