All about United States

Find fantastic United States getaways with Luxury Retreats

The United States: 50 – count ’em – fabulous states to visit, from sun-kissed California in the west to the original skyscrapers thrusting up from the streets of New York’s Big Apple in the east. From the heights of the rugged Rocky Mountains to the low-lying islands of the Florida Keys. And let’s not forget Alaska's frozen expanse and a slice of Polynesian paradise in Hawaii.

The U.S. is vast, full of variety and very easy to travel around. So where to start? Well, how about allowing us to point out some of the best bits? The golden beaches cascading down the coasts; the mountain peaks loaded with fine powder just calling out for skis and boards; the vast swathes of natural beauty perfect for free-roaming hikes; and the cities buzzing with endless possibilities.

Find fame in L.A.

Pick a city, any city – as long as it’s Los Angeles. Creator of its own powerful mystique, the City of Angels is a mammoth urban sprawl and a place that is once visited, never forgotten. And it’s practically impossible to be bored in La La Land. Hollywood hunters will thrill to the sight of a street paved with stars at the Hollywood Walk of Fame – spot signatures and high-five the handprints of the greats of the silver screen, before taking a tour around Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, or catching a movie in this Golden Age survivor. At Paramount Studios, meanwhile, you can cruise the movie lots in a guided golf cart, stopping to explore sound stages and sets in the only studio still making moving pictures in downtown Hollywood.

And it’s not just the movies and their stars that are household names. Head to Rodeo Drive (baby), for a shopping splurge in the street’s many designer stores, or to ogle the supercars parked outside high-end boutiques. Or cruise one of the country’s most iconic streets: palm-lined Sunset Boulevard once epitomized the glamour of old Hollywood, and today the bars and clubs of the Sunset Strip are the place to let your hair down come nightfall.

Just coastin’

If you’re looking for sun, sea, and sand, you’re spoilt for choice. For a start, there’s California, where beach living reigns supreme. Sprawled out along the Pacific coast are smooth sun-kissed stretches and dramatic crags as well as plenty of piers, parks, and promenades for when you’re ready to take a break from the sun lounger. Los Angeles has Venice Beach with its famous boardwalk – grab a smoothie and watch the tanned, toned and tattooed glide past, or head to Muscle Beach to see some seriously sculpted bods sweating it out on full display.

Malibu, meanwhile, boasts pristine stretches where all you need is a beach towel and a book for the perfect lazy day. Orange County takes up the mantle as you head south, with a string of beach towns along 42 miles of coastline where the sun almost always shines. Hit Huntington Beach, otherwise known as “Surf City USA” to catch a wave, visit Newport Beach and enjoy the retro charms of Balboa Fun Zone, or hike through Crystal Cove State Park near Laguna Beach. San Diego is where the laidback beach bum will feel most at home, with more than 60 beaches to choose from. La Jolla is a favorite here, with its family-friendly vibe, protected reef for snorkeling and sunbathing seals and sea lions.

Over on the East Coast, Miami Beach is the ritziest jewel in the crown of Florida, the Sunshine State. The bright and bold art deco hotels, restaurants and bars lining Ocean Drive in South Beach are filled with beautiful people – when they’re not posing on the sand, that is. Spend the day shopping, strolling or preening with the itsy-bitsy-bikini brigade on the beach in Lummus Park, then watch the sunset with a rooftop cocktail and hit the clubs for one hell of a night. It’s a different vibe up in New York State, where the Hamptons offer wild, windswept stretches, atmospheric seafood joints and of course the option of rosé all day. Montauk, out at the tip of Long Island, is one of the best places to head for to catch blissful beach vibes and a chilled-out party scene.

Pick of the slopes

If pristine mountain peaks cloaked in super-fine snow are your thing then, hey, the United States has got you covered for that too. Head to Colorado to find a whole host of ski resorts, each with their own unique character. Find gold-rush history in Breckenridge, class, and culture in Aspen and the charm of old Europe combined with mountains made for skiing in Vail Valley. Follow in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway at Sun Valley in Idaho, the first destination ski resort in the US, or the Olympic athletes at Park City, Utah, which still has an athlete training facility. Jackson Hole, Wyoming offers easy access to Yellowstone National Park as well as 2,500 acres of ski runs and 400 inches of snowfall annually. And then, of course, there’s Lake Tahoe – California’s mountain playground for skiing, swimming, hiking and more. We offer some of the best cabin rentals in the US , which make the ideal base for an American ski vacation.
