Nový Svět, which translates to New World, is a tiny neighborhood just down the hill from the Prague Castle complex. It was built up in the 16th century as a sort of colony for the artists, scientists, and magicians that the emperor at the time liked to have around him, and it has hardly changed since. Since that time, many notable Czech artists from all artistic realms have lived there at various times

Everything Else

The giant red metronome on the top of Letná hill is something to behold on its own – but more intriguing is what it replaces. In 1949, construction began on a statue of Stalin that was to become the biggest one in the world. It was unveiled in 1955 – one day after its designer killed himself out of embarrassment – and then destroyed in 1962 after de-Stalinization had finally made its way out of Moscow to the Czechoslovak communist regime.
