Tap water

The people of Prague have high-quality and tasty drinking water, its composition meets strict European standards, and it is recommended for direct consumption. Compared to bottled water, tap water is environmentally friendly and also 50-100 times cheaper. Anyhow, it is up to you which water to prefer. The main source of drinking water for the capital city of Prague is the Želivka water treatment plant, which supplies 75% of the metropolis and which transports ozonated water to the city via a nearly 52 km long tunnel feeder. The operation of the treatment plant was started in 1972.

Interesting facts about the Czech Republic #1

Compass, sugar cube, Semtex plastic explosive, nylon, soft contact lenses - these are all Czech things. These are Czech inventions. An invention is a thing that did not exist before. And for example, Thomas Alva Edison was a great inventor. Or Nicola Tesla was the inventor. And do you know that the sugar cube is a Czech invention? Are Semtex or silon also Czech inventions? Contact lenses (not glasses) are a Czech invention. Or the compass is a Czech invention.

Interesting facts about the Czech Republic #2

Foreigners. More than half a million foreigners live in the Czech Republic, more precisely 600,000 foreigners. That's about 5% of the population. 95% of the population are Czechs, and 5% are foreigners. Most foreigners (= maximum foreigners) come from Ukraine, Slovakia, Vietnam, Russia, Poland and Germany. About 190,000 Slovaks live in the Czech Republic. But the Czechia is not even in the TOP 10 in Europe when it comes to foreigners. The Czech statistical magazine says that most foreigners in Europe (= maximum number of foreigners) live in Luxembourg, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

If you live in the Czech Republic and like hiking in the countryside and mountains - you know all hiking trails (Czechia has great hiking trails). Our country is a tourist country. In 1888, the Czech Tourists Club began its journey. They started putting colours on hiking trails and making maps. And today, the Czech tourist network (word net = tennis net, internet net, fishing net…) is the most detailed in Europe, and the Czech tourist net is also one of the best in the world.

Interesting facts about the Czech Republic #4

What about beer? You know that Czechs like beer. Czechs love beer! Every Czechian drinks 144 litres of beer every year. In second place is Namibia (108 litres), in third place is Austria (106 litres), and in fourth place is Germany (104 litres). Unconfirmed facts. I drink a maximum of 20 litres of beer each year. But I think my colleagues drink 144 + 124 litres every year (because I don't drink 124 litres of beer), so the statistics work!

Interesting facts about the Czech Republic #5

The Škoda company is Czech, not German. You know that for sure. The damage originated in 1895 (more than 120 years ago) in Mladá Boleslav and then - in Pilsen. Today, Škoda cars are known all over the world. Interestingly, the word "pity" means either damage or bad luck. But it's just a coincidence. The Škoda company is called Škoda because its father name Emil Škoda.
