Sightseeing

The fortress and the lighthouse of São Vicente are well worth a visit, but we love Sagres for the impressive, almost brutish force of its landscape. Cliffs that seem to have been cut by giants, the endless sea that stretches out into the horizon... and the breathtaking sunsets!

Fóia is the highest point of the Algarve, with an incredible view over the South Coast but also over the West Coast. The mountains of Monchique are also a great hiking destination, with lots of great trails. And the town of Monchique is well worth a stop to enjoy the local food.

Silves was the capital of the Arabic Algarve - and it shows. Lose yourself in the narrow streets of the medieval centre, visit the ancient castle, and enjoy a meal or drinks at one of the cafés overlooking the scenery. In August, the traditional medieval fair is one of the best in Portugal, set in the perfect location.

Alte, a traditional village with fountains from the Roman time, is a pleasurable place to visit anytime: during the cooler season, you can enjoy some nearby hiking paths, and on a warm day, you can refresh yourself in the fountains and enjoy a picnic.

On the road to Monchique, stop at Caldas de Monchique to enjoy an old-fashioned spa village set within an unusually green valley that will almost seem impossible within the Algarve scenery.

Faro's city centre, set within the city walls, is one of the last well preserved old towns of the Algarve. A day tour should include a visit to the Ria Formosa, the natural area towards Olhão. Try to book a boat tour, for example.

Lagos has many charms: the town with its laid back atmosphere and great food scene, the nearby marina, the cove-like beaches and the natural area of Ponta da Piedade. Well worth a day trip!

Kids' activities

It's a Zoo. Which may or may not be your kind of place. But it's a nice zoo, with plenty of shade, well laid out, well kept and a good option for a day out with kids.
