Parks & Nature

Star of a Million Holiday Snaps Muckross House is a Victorian mansion. the house rises from superbly designed gardens, the light from nearby Muckross Lake glinting off hundreds of diamond-paned windows. Muckross House is situated in the heart of Killarney National Park, on a small peninsula between Muckross Lake and Lough Leane, just ten minutes’ drive from the Killarney Park Hotel. Enjoy a guided tour of the house and step back in time to the world of the 19th century. The elegantly furnished rooms in the upper storey depict the lives of the landed gentry in the mid-1800s; the more basic accommodation in the basement reveals what life was like for the servants employed in the house. A centre focused on Kerry folk life contains workshops where bookbinders, potters, and weavers demonstrate their work. You may buy samples in the craft shop, next to the excellent cafe/restaurant. Muckross Gardens offer an impressive setting for the house, with flowing lawns, a water garden, an acclaimed arboretum, and an exceptional limestone rockery. The gardens are noted particularly for shrubs such as rhododendrons and azaleas.

Ross Castle A Medieval Bastion of Killarney Ross Castle is located just 2km from the town of Killarney, off the road to Muckross and Kenmare. Recently featured on the front cover of National Geographic, as Hollywood actor and writer Andrew McCarthy traced his Kerry roots, the castle is a striking example of a restored Medieval stronghold. Set against the backdrop of Killarney National Park, with the waters of Lough Leane lapping just outside, this is a magnificent example of an Irish chieftain's stronghold during the Middle Ages. It was probably constructed toward the end of the 15th century by a Chieftain of the O’Donoghue Ross clan. Shielded by a fortified bawn, the castle had a protective ring of circular flanking tower, two of which are still standing. Hire a boat to Innisfallen, a monastic island visible from the front of the castle, take a trip on the waterbus, or organise a kayak trip

The Beaufort Ogham Stones are on a narrow windy road between Beaufort Village and the Gap of Dunloe. There is no parking area and the road is not really safe to walk. The stones were discovered on the roof of an ancient underground passage-way during the building of the Dunloe Castle Hotel. Dating from c. 300 AD, ogham is the oldest form of writing in the Irish language. Letters from the Roman alphabet were represented by a series of horizontal and sloped lines, usually along the edge of standing stones.

As the name implies the Meeting of the waters is where Killarney's famous lakes converge. The Upper lake, Middle Lake (also known as Muckross Lake) and Lower Lake (Lough Leane) all come together at this beautiful spot. It is a little haven of tranquility and can only be reached by foot or bicycle. Also found in this area are Dinis cottage and "The Old Weir Bridge". The easiest way to reach the spot is by walking along the well signposted path from Muckross House for approximately 5km or if you don't feel that energetic then approx one mile beyond Torc Waterfall (direction Kenmare) there is a parking spot on the right hand side of the road. Dinis cottage is signposted from here and the cottage and "the meetings of the waters" is a 15 minute walk from here. Its definitely worth the walk on a fine day.
