Home to the historic house of Frederick Douglass, my neighborhood is primarily residential but full of history. Enjoy the walking tour that shares the history of the neighborhood along W and MLK Streets in our neighborhood. Our neighborhood is oriented around Frederick Douglass home that sits elevated above other homes right in the middle of the neighborhood.

Food scene

This is a great restaurant and a DC staple, less than a mile from the house! I'm a big fan of their quesadillas and I'd recommend you order the "DC Tap Water" if you are looking for a unique cocktail to try!

Interested in southern food, checkout this delicious option in the Navy Yard area. I'm a huge fan of their dry rubbed wings, but every dish here is special. This is also a great brunch option, as they have a great deal on bottomless mimosas!

If you love margaritas, brunch or just a good meal close to the house...Aqua 301 is a good choice! Especially on weekends, its a great place to grab a bite and be in the mix of the hottest part of the Navy Yard neighborhood.

One of my favorite bars in the city, checkout Mission for great drinks (especially during the day), a large crowd and plenty of seating at this two level bar. This is also a good spot to checkout any of your favorite sports games!

Sightseeing

The Anacostia Arts Center is a local favorite in our neighborhood. The Center features the largest Black owned bookstore in DC, Mahogany Books, which is a must visit. They also have one of the cities most popular vegan soulfood restaurants inside. There's also multiple stores inside including a high scale thrift store and Nubian Hueman that features Black owned brands from across the country. The Arts Center features a rotating gallery of local artists and art for sale, as well as many special events throughout the year.

As an avid golfer, I'm a big fan of this historic golf course. It's one of the oldest historically Black courses in the country and is right in the center of D.C. While it may not be the most beautiful course in the region, it's very convenient if you want to get a quick 9 holes in before an adventure in DC.

Traveler advice

Getting around

Uber/Lyft are the fastest and cheapest way to get around

So D.C. is amazing, but parking in the District is either really expensive or really hard to find. Parking garages literally charge over $10 after the first hour, so in most cases taking a Uber/Lyft is comparable in price without the hassle of looking for parking. Also, D.C. is NOTORIOUS for expensive parking tickets, so you never want to park illegally or forget the pay the meter when parking. If you're up for it, a fun alternative is using the scooters for rent. It's a much cheaper and often faster way to move, but I'd only recommend if you feel confident driving an electric scooter.
Ways to save

Take advantage of the free museums!

There are literally hundreds of museums and historical sites in D.C., I'd recommend exhausting them before paying for a museum or historical experience.
