Ilha do Farol is a small community on a barrier island on the edge of the Ria Formosa, around 10km from Faro and 6km from Olhão. Praia do Farol, or Ilha do Farol as it’s known locally, is actually located on Ilha da Culatra. Although the names suggest they are separate islands, they are two different parts of the same 6km long island. With extensive white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and an incredible desert island feel it’s a fantastic day trip. The island is mostly known for its exceptional beaches, incredible water and deserted experience. As soon as you step out of the small community of Farol, you’ll experience it. It’s a supremely relaxing place to spend the day on and is an incredible break from much of the usual Algarve. However, that doesn’t mean you should skip through the small village and head straight to the beach at Praia da Ilha do Farol. In the village of Farol you’ll find delightful houses, wonderful gardens and a few small coffee shops, all under the setting of the stunning lighthouse!

Armona feels like a paradise within a paradise. A seductive community at sea, where the locals know each other, and the constrictions of time does not seem to apply. People happily greet you on the street, more than willing to help you with questions or navigational help. It is a very pleasurable experience regardless of if you travel alone or with larger company. The boat journey from Olhão to Armona takes less than 20 minutes with several options to choose from. Depending on the season, the ferry makes 4-9 scheduled trips per day with a mere round-trip cost of ≈4€ per person. If you prefer to not be bound by the ferry time-schedule, you also have the possibility to take a boat taxi which is quicker, but averages around 25€/one-way. Regardless of which option you choose to travel with, travel you should! If you walk through the main street to the other side of the island, you will see charming houses and garden, all designed after their owners own taste. Once you reach the other side, there is a beach that extends for as long as the eyes can see, with golden sand and places to relax for a drink or something to eat. Keep in consideration that prices are a bit more expensive here since most things need to be shipped over by boat. Bring warm clothes, physical money, a beach towel, sun glasses, and come here at a time when the weather is good!

Avenida Infante de Sagres is the idyllic palm tree lined promenade that stretches almost the length of Quarteira and its beach. Just walking along its length will get you firmly into a holiday mood! It’s a popular spot for walkers, cyclists and the more active, it even has a variety of outdoor gyms along the way. For the more leisurely people, there are more bars, cafés and restaurants than you can count. The golden sand on Praia de Quarteira is soft, clean and unspoiled. The sea water is cool, clear and transparent. The beach is routinely awarded Blue Flag status which means it has a great reputation for cleanliness, access and safety. The beach is gently sloping, and the regular breakwaters provide protection from waves, so it’s usually a calm place to swim and safe for children and young swimmers. During the summer, multiple sections of the beach are lifeguarded too.

The Carvoeiro boardwalk offers its partakers some of the regions most incredible viewpoints over the Algarvean coastline. Alongst the wooden walkway you can find “The Algar Seco” which are a series of fascinating cliff formations, naturally carved out of the limestone bedrock. One of these cliff formations is called “A Boneca” (The Doll) from which you have a stunning view over the ocean through its arched windows. You´ll then continue down the stairs, reaching the exposed sinkhole where the sunshine creates remarkable nuances in the saltwater pools. If you feel like having something to eat after this memorable experience, the “Boneca Restaurant” is located just outside the cave.

Highest point in Algarve. Located at almost 1.000 meters in altitude, the view is remarkable and the drive is quite beautiful, as well! On a clear day you can see Cape Saint Vincent in the west, Faro in the east and Serra da Arrabida to the north, with what looks like an ocean of green treetops elegantly merging with the Atlantic Ocean to the south. On a cloudier day, I would recommend standing on the western point of the summit during sunset. The clouds lie like a cover over Algarve, reflecting the intense colours of the sunset. It is quite the experience!

Although it began being built in the 1840s, Estoi Palace was not completed until 1909, by José Francisco da Silva, the Viscount of Estoi. The architectural design of the property, by architect Domingos da Silva Meira, is markedly eclectic, combining neoclassical and Rococo styles. The buildings are exceptionally beautiful, particularly the palace. A double staircase leads up to an impressive facade and the interior is decorated with tiled panels, stained glass and plasterwork. Equally interesting are the gardens, laid out in French style and containing fruit trees, palm trees, fountains and a number of sculptures. Recently restored, the palace now functions as a “pousada de charme” (charm hotel).

The Cascata Queda do Vigario is located on the river Alte. This beautiful waterfall begins on Quinta do Freixo and ends 24 m below by a beautiful natural lake. To get there, you have to go to the cemetery parking lot. At the back of it, go around the barrier and follow the gravel path that goes down. Walk 300 meters and this lovely waterfall will appear. At your disposal, a large, well-kept plot of land, ideal for basking in the sun, and to cool off with a little dip in the river (very cold). In the summer, the place is very popular.

Benagil is most famous for the sea cave located just around the corner from the beach. This cave has been featured in top destination lists and “places you have to see” all across the internet and thanks to visitors sharing their incredible photos of the cave it has become one of the top things to do in the Algarve. Getting to the cave has become easier than ever thanks to it, but we would recommend to book a kayak/SUP before visiting Benagil for quicker and more efficient experience. You can also purchase your own floating device to swim out to the cave. It is a bit of a swim to get out there and the current has been known to get quite strong here at times, so we would advice to not try to swim out there without any floating device.

Cabo de São Vicente (Cape St. Vincent) is a headland in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve, southern Portugal. It is the southwesternmost point of Portugal and of mainland Europe. Today you can venture there for one of the most beautiful sunset imaginable in Algarve, see the 24 meter tall lighthouse, visit it’s courtyard, or have a snack and drink at the located there. It is a location with great history and should be visited, if possible! Just make sure that you bring warm clothes since it can get quite windy at times. History: Cape St. Vincent was already sacred ground in Neolithic times. The ancient Greeks called it Ophiussa (Land of Serpents), inhabited by the Oestriminis and dedicated here a temple to Heracles. The Romans called it Promontorium Sacrum (or Holy Promontory). Strabo, in his Geography calls this cape the most western tip of the known world and reports the place was considered magical. Common people believed the sun sank here hissing into the ocean, marking the edge of their world. According to legend, the name of this cape is linked to the story of a martyred fourth-century Iberian deacon St. Vincent whose body was brought ashore here. A shrine was erected over his grave; according to the Arab geographer Al-Idrisi, it was always guarded by ravens and is therefore named by him Kanīsah al-Ghurāb, meaning "Church of the Raven"). King Afonso Henriques (1139–1185) had the body of the saint exhumed in 1173 and brought it by ship to Lisbon, still accompanied by the ravens. This transfer of the relics is depicted on the coat of arms of Lisbon. All existing buildings—including the Vila do Infante of Henry the Navigator—fell into ruins because of the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The Franciscan friars who cared for the shrine stayed on until 1834, when all monasteries were disbanded in Portugal.

Between the 8th and 13th centuries, the castle was occupied by the moors who expanded it, making it one of the best preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, resulting in its classification as a National Monument in 1910.
