This museum has been housed in the former Convento da Assunção since 1973 and was founded in 1994 to commemorate the 5th centenary of the birth of Infante D. Henrique. In the beginning, the museum occupied three rooms on the ground floor of the Paços do Concelho building and had 218 pieces. One of the richest sections of the museum is the Almirante Ramalho Ortigão Tiles Collection, with rare and unique examples in our country. The contents of this museum are quite valuable and include sections on Epigraphy, Archaeology, Paleontology, Ethnography, Archaeological Ceramics, Tiles, Mosaics, Glassware, Weapons, Art Gallery, Engravings, Heraldry, Numismatics, Medals, Metrology, Sphinx and local curiosities. At the bottom of the cloister are the stones of Ossónoba and old Faro, found during excavations. In the upper part of the same are arranged stones of weapons. As a whole, the archaeological and lapidary centers that cover, especially, the Roman and Medieval times stand out.
