Food scene

Believe it or not, seeing the chef carve meat off a BBQ spit with a machete isn’t the best part of this roadside restaurant, located just a few minutes south of Casa Arroyo. We‘ve been coming here for 20 years and informally call it “the torta place”, but it has a name! “Los Mejores Tacos De Puebla”. The tacos are the best and the tortas are even better. Friends of the family have been known to drive South of the border JUST for these tortas.

Dinner at Ruben’s is like coming home. We’ve known the proprietor, Ruben, for 20 years and are thrilled to support the restaurant in its new location just North of Cantamar. The restaurant has an ocean view which is almost outshined by the warm and rustic wood interior. The bar cleverly integrated original barrels from La Cetto boutique winery in Baja’s Guadalupe Valley. Nice! The menu offers classic Mexican dishes and, the best yet, they are always open to accommodating our large group. Sports enthusiasts can find a seat at the bar to follow the latest game on the flatscreen. The Sunday brunch buffet should NOT be missed! The new location of Ruben's Palm Grill is: Carretera Tijuana-Ensenada km 43.5 (145.01 mi) Primo Tapia, Baja California, Mexico 22714

This neighborhood bakery offers a large assortment of freshly baked Mexican sweet bread ("pan dulce"). It is baked on-site and is available all day, however arrive early for a fresh and still-warm assortment. The Concha is the most iconic pan dulce, but my personal favorite is the YoYo, the outside of the bread is coated with strawberry jam and tiny coconut shavings. Bolillos, Mexican sandwich rolls, are baked fresh and out of the oven around 1pm each day. Enjoy!

Neighborhoods

There’s an unassuming surf hut visible from the cuota as you pass Alisitos, a 15 min drive South of Casa Arroyo. You’ll spot the colourful longboards on end next to a hand painted sign that reads, “Surf Lessons”. THIS is where we met Armando, a seasoned instructor from the resorts down South who gave our 3 nieces a fun and safe intro to surfing. He isn’t just a surfer looking to make a buck, but a true “teacher”. Highly recommend. Fluent in English and Spanish.

Margarita in hand and the sun is low. Feast tonight in Puerto Nuevo on a lobster tails while serenaded by a trio of Mariachi's. There are many restaurants to choose from and the menu is generally the same. People come here for the lobster! You will pay more for your lobster if the restaurant has a view or an "American" style interior.

Popotla fishing village is a 15 min drive North of Casa Arroyo. I absolutely love being able to buy a fresh catch from the fishermen on the beach as they pull in on their boats. You can ask them to gut it for you so you can easily butterfly it on the BBQ. Just grill it- skin, scales and all! Or you there are local stalls where you can pay them to clean and cook the fish for you.

This charming Spanish-style hotel sits cliffside 10 min North of Casa Arroyo off of the cuota. It has a unique view of the surf rolling in that you won't find anywhere else. Honest! This is because you can see the waves rolling past you, not towards you. This is a great spot to enjoy the sunset with a beer or cocktail in hand.

A 75-foot-tall statue of Jesus displaying his Sacred Heart sits atop the hillside overlooking the ocean. It is just a few minutes North Casa Arroyo and across the highway from the Las Rocas Resort and Spa. It was commissioned by Don Antonio. "Don Antonio was 75 years old and in ill health at the time he made this journey to see his dream come true. It was his vision to give something to the community. As the story goes, when he was little boy, he and his siblings had no father. They survived by taking care of one another. He did not have shoes until he was twelve. Every day they would go to church to pray for work to sustain the family. Little by little the prayers were answered and the family began to thrive in the earlier days of Rosarito. The Sacred Heart of Christ is the symbol of his deepest gratitude." Credit: https://www.bajabound.com/bajaadventures/bajastoryteller/jesusstatue.php

Ever wanted to get inside a lion enclosure? How about a jaguar, tiger or leopard? Pai Pai Eco Park in Ensenada, about 1 and half hours from Cantamar, is an eco adventure wonderland. $10 gets you a tour of the big cat rehab center. For an additional $65, our group of 4 kids (9 to 21) were able to go inside the enclosure with the 4 month old big cats and hold Simba the lion and hand feed ring tailed Lemurs. There is also a petting zoo for the youngins, or the weak of heart. A beautiful restaurant, bar and souvenir shop make this place a full day adventure. The drive was easily mapped using Google Maps.

Shopping

Best place to do a local grocery run. Calimax is a modern American-style store with bakery, produce, butcher, dry goods and pharmacy. You can even book an appointment to see a doctor on-site who can then issue a prescription. You MUST MUST MUST buy fresh-made flour tortillas from the bakery section. They will complement any meal - quesadillas, breakfast burritos, and more!
