Where you’ll be

Paris, Île-de-France, France

La Butte Montmartre is one of Paris' hills.

It also historically referred to as Mons Martyrum, or the Mount of Martyrs, though there’s no proof this name is historically accurate. According to the legend, the mount was a significant place of passage for Saint Denis, Paris' first bishop. He survived his execution. Victim of anti-Christian persecution, he was decapitated on the hill of Montmartre with two other followers, Rustique and Eleuthere). The legend narrates that someone picked up his head and walked up to the place of the current Saint Denis Basilica where he is interred. One of the historical roads belonging to Montmartre is called Rue des Martyrs.
Montmartre is associated with Mons Martis - the Mount of Mars because during the Gallo-Roman period, a temple dedicated to Mars, god of war, was situated on the mount, where the current Saint-Pierre church is located (as well as another temple dedicated to Mercury). This story is more credible. Following the Christian period, the Mount of Mars would have been reinterpreted as Mount of Martyr, "martre" meaning "martyr" in old French.
