The space
Welcome to Lotus Mountain Villa, a 70-year-old former farmhouse in Mui Wo, on Lantau Island.
Mui Wo is roughly 30 minutes by taxi from the airport, and 30 minutes by ferry from Central, Discovery Bay, and Peng Chau and Cheung Chau islands. Disneyland …
LM Villa adjoins open fields and woods, and is about five minutes’ bike ride, or 12 minutes’ walk, from the ferry pier. Your bedroom is next to the porch, and sleeps one, or two if the pull-out bed is used.
You will share the bathroom, and are welcome to use the back garden and the (flat) roof which looks up to Lin Fa Shan (Lotus Mountain). A two-seater bike is also available.
We are an Anglo-Belgian couple, have lived in Hong Kong for more than 15 years, and speak English, Cantonese, Putonghua, Flemish, French and Nepali.
Mui Wo is a popular weekend beach resort, and has a good selection of restaurants, serving Chinese, Brazilian, Indian, Italian, Turkish, Mediterranean and Scottish (if you count McDonald’s) cuisine. There’s also a British-style pub, and one of the Chinese restaurants cooks Vietnamese at the weekends. Prices range from HK$ for a plate of dim sum, to X for Brazil. While probably some way short of being a shoppers’ paradise, the town does host a good independent bookstore, some antiques and curios shops, a small Thai spa, and two supermarkets. There are also two banks, and a currency exchange booth.

Getting here: Take a blue (not red or green) taxi (tel), which costs about HK$140 (US$). The direct (A35) bus runs infrequently, costing ($X – Y). Otherwise, catch the Q bus to Tung Chung ($) and change for the (W -- $) to Mui Wo, disembarking at the market (“Guy See” in Cantonese). Sit on the right-hand side of the bus for the best views. We will supply directions to LM Villa once your booking is confirmed. Trolley service on request if you have a lot of luggage?

My husband Edward (Ed) and I bought our 70-year-old farm house just over two years ago (prior to this we were living just five minutes down the road) and restored it completely. The result is a Portuguese style villa (we were our own designers) spacious enough for six in the middle of the countryside. The roof houses Ed’s office and a roof terrace perfect for watching the sun rise or set over the mountains and trees. The house and conservatory are set in a fence enclosed yard with a well at the back leading out to the garden. Towards the front of the house is our vegetable field which produces enough food (hopefully) to keep us fed and supply two local restaurants. The only noise you are likely to hear here is that of a dog barking, the bell of the local primary school in the distance or the cackle of Mrs Lo, our neighbour as she engages in a rather one-sided chat to a friend on the phone.
