The space
This FLW inspired home sits on a high point of its surrounding 100 acres. It was built on a granite ridge that rises 20 feet above the general lay of the land at the front of the property. The overall goal with the design was to build an innovative home where “light, air and vista permeated the whole with a sense of unity” and fit the natural surroundings. There is an emphasis on natural light so there are lots of windows and they are large. The east facing front wall of the great room has windows that start at the floor and rise 14 feet. There are large corner windows at each end of the building to maximize the view and the light. Throughout attention was given to airflow and most windows open to catch the air.

Like the land around it the home is to be an “inspiring space”. The central pod ceiling is almost 18 feet high at the front and the bedroom pods are 14 feet at their highest points. The mono-sloped ceilings add an interesting dramatic and unique feel to the interior. The interior was finished using natural materials wherever possible, and ones that again work with and reflect the natural surroundings – rock and wood. The primary heat source is an efficient wood stove that burns wood harvested from the property. There is a propane furnace and an efficient “on demand’ water heating system.

The home has “beauty of purposefulness” about it. There are 2 bedrooms + a master bedroom with ensuite. There is a main bathroom and a main floor laundry room a huge great room. The kitchen has a large island and a dining area that has 8 foot and 6-foot sliding glass doors that open up to a south facing patio area.

This unique home provides a truly inspiring space that works with the incredible piece of land that is Rancho Relaxo with its granite rocks, miles of trails, bridges, creek and waterfall. We look forward to sharing this space with like-minded individuals looking for the Rancho Relaxo experience.

Where you’ll be

Orillia, Ontario, Canada

This is an incredible 100 acre nature retreat. Rancho Relaxo is located just north of Orillia with its charming heritage downtown, and beautiful lakefront park, Couchiching Park. It is an easy drive into Orillia with its interesting shops, restaurants and attractions. A 30 minute day trip drive can take you south to Barrie or north to Muskoka each with a huge variety of things to see and do. Lake St. George Golf course and Hawk Ridge golf course are both 10-15 minutes. Weber's Hamburgers with a nearby Tim Horton's is less than 10 minutes. At the end of Telford Line, 8 Km away is Lake Couchiching.

“The Land Between”

Rancho Relaxo visitors have commented that the property has “incredible variety, a mix of everything” – water features: a creek, a waterfall, a majestic mixed forest, a rock barren area, open fertile fields, and of course the granite rock – the first place in the area with large granite rock croppings. These natural features all come together to make it a truly unique place, located in the southern tip of the incredible transition area known as “The Land Between”.

“The Land Between is what ecologists call an ecotone, a large transition zone which lies at the intersection of the Canadian Shield and the St. Lawrence lowlands stretching 240 km across South Central Ontario from Georgian Bay to Kingston and until recently it has been entirely over looked. However, if you’ve lived in this area, you’ve always known that there is something special about this place; where an undulating landscape of rocky barrens, majestic forests and pavement-like alvars converge. The Land Between is a place of natural splendor and rich cultural heritage…

The Trent Severn Waterway dances along the southern edge of the land between; and it’s no wonder - the region has a higher percentage of shoreline to area than anywhere else in Ontario. This saturated geography allowed the people to use the area as a key East-West corridor for thousands of years cutting trails overland and plying the waters by canoe. Many of these same rivers and channels now form the Trent Severn Waterway…

Historically, First Nations peoples appreciated the area for its biodiversity; a thriving fishing economy was born of The Land Between’s plentiful waters… the land between is the only place were species from the North (the wolf the raven and the river otter) would ever meet with species from the South (the crow the skunk and the woodchuck)...
The land between remains almost entirely in tact today with over 90% natural cover. This is a fragile and threatened environment. The Land Between‘s water resources overlay barrens and areas with shallow soils, making them susceptible to contamination and aggregate extraction.

The Land Between is an economic and cultural asset for residents in local and nearby towns and for seasonal residents and visitors from cities 1.5 to 2 hours drive away – the GTA, Barrie and Kingston. Few metropolitan areas in the world have such large and natural wonders so close by…”
