Where you’ll be

Hvolsvöllur, Iceland

Steinafjall mountain, famously depicted in Nobel Laureate Halldór Laxness’s novel Paradísarheimt (Paradise Reclaimed), resides at the very heart of Katla Geopark. Due to its great geographical diversity the park was the first of its kind to be designated in Iceland. Indeed, two of the country's most powerful volcanoes, Katla and Eyjafjallajökull, each under their relevant and enormous glaciers, both fall within its borders. A visit here is thus a true first-hand experience of the land of ice and fire. But the area is also known for its biodiversity, manifested for instance in the impressive gorge high and right above our house, internationally acknowledged as an important sanctuary for 10,000 pairs of Arctic fulmar sea-birds (Fulmarus glacialis). The local Icelandic sheep are free to roam in the same hills and cliffs in summer, feeding off the sparse but nutritious herbs and vegetation which quality only increases the higher up they go. Views towards the sea from Steinar 3 are breathtaking and picturesque as to sense of endlessness and open space and are highly reminiscent of late painter Georg Gudni’s unique work which was inspired by Iceland’s eternal landscape throughout. On the plains and pastures leading towards the ocean front, herds of the revered Icelandic pony can be seen leisurely preparing for the winter to come, their strength and endurance allowing them to live outside all year around. Very close by is Holtslón sea lagoon, one of the country's main destinations for the greylag and pink-footed geese and numerous other migrant birds and where the locals also fish for delicious sea trout (or urchin). On the coastline itself (importantly devoid of all tourism) the magnificent waves of the North Atlantic Ocean break incessantly on the pitch-black volcanic sand beach. A tour-de-force of Nature not to be missed.
