The MatopHouse is a very carefully considered sanctuary. It is enveloped by a garden frequented by birds, hares and duikers, and has views of the distant Karkloof hills. The house is full of character (and books), and is a tranquil space in which to read, write, cook, create – and simply "be". Set on a quiet eco-estate on the fringe of Howick, it is conveniently close to the Ambers, the Karkloof trails, the Midlands Meander, Midmar Dam, and numerous cafes and attractions.

The space
Please note that due to the design of the house all guests must be over the age of 8; and due to estate restrictions we cannot accept bookings from guests travelling with dogs of any size (even very old ones).

The MatopHouse is the light and airy home of two wandering travel writers, and is available for bookings when they are away – guests have exclusive use of the entire property. Thanks to its organic “breathing” system the house is cool in summer and cosy in winter. It is exceptionally well equipped and makes for a very comfortable self-catering stay.

There are two spacious en-suite bedrooms. The downstairs room has a queen-size bed and the upstairs bedroom (which has a large work desk with a beautiful view) has two single beds that can be fitted together as a king-size bed.

Highlights include:
* The captivating “book nook” library, which envelopes a day bed
* The lounge – cozy with a fire in winter (we supply some wood), and with two walls of stacking glass doors that open onto the veranda and garden
* The swinging chair on the wide veranda, a perfect sundowner spot
* The braai area, set between yellowwood trees
* The al-fresco dining area, under white stinkwood trees
* The large dome-shaped rain shower in the master bedroom

The kitchen includes:
* Gas stove and oven
* Microwave/convection oven
* Fridge and freezer
* Blender, slow cooker, Wonderbag
* Baking trays, baking scale, measuring jugs
* Coffee-bean grinder, French press, mocha pot
* Tea, coffee, sugar, oils, array of spices

Practical amenities:
* Dishwasher
* Washing machine
* Lockable garage for bikes
* Bike wash area
* Shadecloth-covered parking

The MatopHouse is set on an eco-estate that shares a boundary with Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve; after heavy rains, you can hear the roar of the Howick Falls. The estate is a haven of indigenous trees and flowers; there is a wide variety of birds here; duiker and scrub hares can often be seen in the evenings.
The popular Village cafe and Woolworths Food are just a down the road; St John's Lifestyle Centre (with Pick n Pay and Clicks) is a short drive up the road, as are the Ambers, the Karkloof Farmers' Market, the Old Mushroom Farm lifestyle hub, Karkloof Club and the network of MTB trails.
