Where you’ll be

Matsloot, Drenthe, Netherlands

the surroundings offer beautiful nature, is cozy, quiet and safe.
The Matsloot area is very suitable for water and marshland birds, for amphibians and fish, for dragonflies and otters.
The dynamics of the rising and rushing water adds something extra to the marshland. As a result, it will be different in the Matsloot area every year. Will it be a dry year with good opportunities for Quarter King and expanding mouse populations? Or does it get very wet, giving Porcelain Hoen, Roerdomp and dragonflies a chance? In addition to nature, history is also an important element in the Matsloot area.
There are many ferry bars in the area; remnants of occupancy in the Middle Ages. The terpen are not high. Often they are only recognizable by the other vegetation that grows there. A few terpen are now covered with an extra low ground to protect the archaeological content from the potential influence of, especially, reed roots.
The Roderwolderdijk was for a long time the only way from this part of Drenthe to the city of Groningen. At Hoeve Eiteweert (formerly an inn), you could cross the confluence of Peizer- and Eelderdiep, the Koningsdiep, by boat.
The Groot Waal is also hundreds of years old. This elbow pants forest was created in a very wet place in the area, where a lot of furry rises. It used to be used as a chopped wood forest. Now it is, among other things, an important finding of the Zeggekorfslak.
More recent history form the sand holes at the end of the Matsloot.
