Welcome to Deal Cottage, a traditional purbeck stone built tiny mid terrace cottage in the Herston area of Swanage. Formerly a quarryman's home for many generations this grade 2 listed property is part of the original town and has uninterrupted views of two dramatic Purbeck Hills; Ninebarrow and Ballard Down. As an area of outstanding natural beauty you can enjoy walking and the outdoor life. Swanage beach and independent shops are a short walk away with friendly pubs and superb places to eat.

The space
Deal Cottage is a newly refurbished cosy space for 2 guests. It was originally built as a 1-up, 1-down home for the men who quarried and shaped the purbeck stone that built so much of London in the Georgian era. In 1790 they didn't think too much about you or I so it's a bit of a quirky layout with two steps in the well equipped kitchen which includes a dishwasher, washing machine and microwave. Open the top stable door and watch the birds on the feeders whilst you fix your coffee in the mornings.
Tea and coffee are provided from two local Dorset businesses; Clipper fairtrade teabags from Beaminster, and we supply Swanage coffee roasters Carve Coffee whole beans for that freshly ground cafetière in the mornings (a Wilfa Svart professional electric coffee grinder is in the kitchen for your use).

The compact modern bathroom is on the ground floor where you’ll find excellent water pressure from the over bath shower.
You’ll find space in the hallway to hang coats and shoe storage wall boxes for your walking boots.

In the living room during recent renovations we uncovered the original piece of purbeck stone lintel that forms the head of what would have been an open fireplace. It has become the main interior feature of our home, the fireplace now has a log burner installed and we just love it. There is a folding dining table in the living room, for those English summer days when it’s not quite warm enough for breakfast in the garden.
For a quiet night in feel free to browse our book collection, or catch up on a series on the smart tv (which has a Google Chromecast installed).

Upstairs is the most restful and relaxing bedroom space with views of the purbeck hills to enjoy from the comfort of the bed whilst sipping your first cuppa of the day. Super comfy king size bed with new ‘Emma’ mattress, luxuriously soft, breathable ECO Duvet from The Fine Bedding Company (made from 100% recycled PET bottles) and 100% cotton bed linen. The bedroom has blackout Roman blinds and plenty of storage. There's a fully operational office work space upstairs (including a printer) if you need to keep in touch with work, but only if you can keep yourself from watching the birds on the garden feeders from this room!

Our sunny south facing courtyard garden space has comfortable seating and is somewhere you can enjoy your breakfast. There's also a barbeque for your use. From here listen out for the whistles from the steam trains as they go through nearby Herston Halt station!

Please Note:

No children. Not suitable or safe for infants/babies due to original features of the 230 year old cottage - steep narrow stairwell and unconventional steps in the kitchen and bathroom.

No pets.

Deal Cottage is on the High Street main road so there will be traffic noise at peak times.

Oh and if you're taller than 6 feet remember to bring a hard hat!

Where you’ll be

Dorset, England, United Kingdom

We have a unique "Island" here in the Purbecks. The Jurassic coastline holds mystery and secrets, folklore and tradition. There are haunted pubs, stone cutter's stories, fishermen's tales, artists, musicians, makers, crafts people and a true sense of deep seated belonging that is the weave beneath the hills. Old Harry Rocks, Durlston Castle, Dancing Ledge and The Square and Compass make this part of Britain incredibly special.

We are Nicola and David Holland and we own a cute, tiny grade 2 listed cottage in Swanage that we’ve recently refurbished. We’ve lived on the Dorset coast for over 30 years and love it here. We move out of our cottage during the Summer months and into our campervan to go off travelling. We list Deal Cottage on Airbnb for others to enjoy during Summer whilst we are away.
