The space
Burton is in the centre of England, 11 miles south of Derby and 13 miles north of Lichfield. Glencoe House is a 15-to-20-minute walk from the railway station, town centre and main bus stops. A newsagent’s & chippy are nearby.
We’re in the heart of the National Forest, and Burton’s extensive footpaths on the Washlands (floodplains) along the River Trent are just a short walk away (about 10 minutes). Walkers and cyclists are welcome; and we’ve undercover storage for bikes. See website for more information on things to do in the Burton area.

Where you’ll be

Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, United Kingdom

Anglesey Ward has many corner shops, Asian & Eastern European shops, and two chemists. The Uxbridge Arms on the corner of Queen Street and Branston Road serves excellent real ales and ciders.
The Trent Washlands with its many footpaths is just a short walk away. On the Washlands (floodplains) you can walk along the river all the way to the Riverside Inn in Branston (and a bit further), or go north to Burton town centre, or cross the Ferry Bridge to Stapenhill and do a circular walk crossing back over old Burton Bridge – nearly all the time on the Washlands! Many visitors to Burton only see the town centre, and are unaware there’re all these rural walks by the river just a short stroll away.
Derby is 11 miles away and I recommend the Quad in Derby for films and events. Lichfield is 13 miles away where you have Lichfield Cathedral, Samuel Johnson’s house and Erasmus Darwin’s house, and between here and Lichfield is Alrewas, home of the National Memorial Arboretum — are all worth the trip. Birmingham is easy to get to by train (my web lists train information and local attractions).

Glencoe House B&B is not currently open. Perhaps in 2022 . . . The cat isn't named Delora (Air BnB's software automatically displays the above, assuming the photo will be of the host). Delora Jones, an experienced home cook, will be your host when we reopen. Delora had been a regular bus- & train-user, and would have been able to advise on the best deals and routes to take. But in July 2021, the government removed the requirement to wear masks on public transport in England, which cut her off from using public transport as it is not safe for her: the Delta variant is 60% more transmissible than the Alpha variant (which was 60% more transmissible than the original Covid-19 virus), so joining a bus or train full of unmasked passengers, windows closed, crowded, is hugely risky.

During your stay

I am happy to help guests and to advise on things like walks and public transport, and to answer any other questions. In the kitchen, there is a self-catering area and dining table for guests; I am sometimes working at the opposite end of the kitchen (it’s a big kitchen) and will respect the guest’s privacy whilst doing so. If the guests would prefer to eat privately, there is a small table in the guest lounge, and a tray for carrying their foods.
Breakfasts are made to order, and special diets are catered for but I may need some notice if special ingredients are needed (no notice is needed for vegetarian).
