Prepare to be charmed. Featured in Apartment Therapy and local publications, the Rivermont Carriage House is a gorgeous slice of Lynchburg history. Located on a private estate amidst stately mansions, yet close to colleges, hospitals, and downtown. With private parking, high-speed internet, and upscale amenities, you can escape the city and shelter in nature.

The space
This 1890’s Victorian carriage house was lovingly restored for a luxurious, yet charming feel. Featuring antique brick and wide plank wood floors, handmade doors and stairs, locally-sourced vintage furniture, beautiful plants and a lovely rustic kitchen. It’s accessed by a shared driveway with the Classic Revival mansion in front.

Bedroom: fall asleep on a queen-sized Casper memory foam mattress (blackout blinds provided), and wake up to singing birds and mountain views. The tin roof makes rain storms something to be enjoyed. Amenities include freshly laundered, soft 100% cotton bedding, towels and bathrobes; hypoallergenic gel pillows, extra blankets, an iron, ironing board, reading nook with a rocking chair, and a Victrola Bluetooth record player with vintage vinyls. Party of three? The Rivermont Carriage House can be a 3-guest space. The third person gets the comfy couch (not a sleeper sofa) in the living room.

Bathroom: the bathroom has an abundance of complimentary amenities (shampoo, conditioner, shower caps, body washes, deodorant, shaving cream, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental picks, Tylenol, Advil, hair dryer, makeup removers, feminine products, a first aid box and lint roller).

Kitchen: the fully-equipped kitchen has a refrigerator filled with cold drinks, a convection oven, microwave, toaster and beautiful ceramic dinnerware created in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The coffee bar offers Starbucks coffees, creamers, herbal teas, and hot chocolate. Enjoy welcome muffins, oatmeal, breakfast bars, trail mix, popcorn and candies. A combination washer/dryer comes with detergent and fabric softener.

Living Room: the living room has an XL sofa (not a sleeper sofa) for daytime lounging or nighttime slumber (blackout blinds provided). A vintage Singer sewing machine recrafted as a dining table does double duty as a work desk. Lots of board games and puzzles, a smart HD projector with complimentary Netflix, and an Echo Dot for music streaming provide all the ingredients for a perfect night in.

Sunporch: a wonderful place to sit and let the world go by! Relax in the egg chair with a drink. Play checkers with a friend, or bring out your laptop and work outside.

Side patio: the sunporch leads out to the gravel side patio. With a Solo firepit, two Adirondack chairs, wood and cooking utensils, you can enjoy hotdogs or s’mores at any time of the day!

Guests have full access to the home, sunporch, patio and our grounds. There is private parking for 2 or more cars next to, or in front of, the carriage house.

PETS: we allow 1 well-behaved smaller dog (less than 35 pounds) with prior approval, acceptance of rules, and a $20 pet fee/night. Please note you will need to keep your pet with you at all times. Pet may not be left behind while the owner is out, unless crated. Crate, pet bed, and pet bowls provided.

We celebrate diversity and inclusion. ALL are welcome here.

Things to note:
The space is one of a kind. We understand that it may not be for everyone. Our carriage house was built by hand 128 years ago. The floors and ceilings are not all level, and the stairs are not all the same height. The sloped upstairs ceilings are only 7’ tall, so those over 6’ might need to duck their head when entering the bedroom or bathroom. There is a small step-up area in the bathroom. Dishes must be washed by hand. The carriage house is not ideal for small children. But it is charming, unique and in the most beautiful section of the Rivermont Historic District. Rate includes a 5.3% stated VA Occupancy Taxes & Fees, and a bundled 6.5% City of Lynchburg Lodging Tax. You must be 25 or older to reserve a stay.

Where you’ll be

Lynchburg, Virginia, United States

Private and secluded, the carriage house is behind the main house on 1.5 acres.

Built in 1893 as a horse stable on the estate of George M. Jones, the Rivermont Carriage House was converted into a guest house 65 years later. George M. Jones was a philanthropist who played a large part in Lynchburg’s history. He owned the Rivermont Company, which expanded Lynchburg westward with the construction of the Rivermont Bridge, and a trolley line into downtown. In 1891, he gave 20 acres of land and over $40,000 to help establish Randolph-Macon Women's College (now Randolph College - walk a few blocks to visit!). He and his wife also built the elaborate George M. Jones Memorial Library in 1905. In 2019, the carriage house underwent a full restoration.

Our quiet and green neighborhood is perfect for morning walks or runs down Rivermont Avenue. You'll pass period revival facades, wrought iron fences, flowering trees and ivy-covered gates. A wide central avenue, secluded parks and vistas separate upper Rivermont from the older parts of Lynchburg. This area is peaceful and secluded, but still within a quick walk or drive to many restaurants and attractions. Nowhere is more beautiful in Lynchburg than the Rivermont Historic District!

My husband (Tom) and I live in a Classic Revival house on the same property as the carriage house. We love bookstores, traveling, reading, our daughters Marina and Vanessa, and our very good boy Sam. When we retired, we decided we wanted to restore a historic home, and hoped to create something unique to pass along to our daughters. We so enjoyed restoring both houses that we decided to share our carriage house with visitors to Lynchburg! Our carriage house was featured in Apartment Therapy, and in our local newspaper “The News & Advance”. Our Classic Revival home was featured in “The News & Advance”and was Lynchburg’s Design House in 2015. Follow us on (Hidden by Airbnb) at @rivermontcarriagehouse
