Roanoke, Virginia, United States

Outdoor enthusiasts and athletes are lured to this area for nature trails at neighboring Happy Hollow Gardens and Poor Mountain Area Natural Preserve. Valhalla Vineyard, with its breathtaking view of the Roanoke Valley below, is less than a mile up the road. The steep and winding Mt. Chestnut Road and nearby 12 O'clock Knob also are training grounds for cyclists.

There are fun outdoor events in Roanoke, Va., including the Blue Ridge Marathon, a foot race that will happen live (and virtual) on April 17, 2021; and Roanoke Go Fest, which usually is the second weekend of October. For up-to-date information on outdoor events visit Roanoke Outside online.
