Travel back in time to stay in an old Malay traditional cottage that features a lovely timber structure located in the middle of Kamunting town in Perak. Built in 1974, it has been refurbished to modern living by the owner, where guests stay on the main part (Rumah Ibu) of the house that can comfortably accommodates up to six persons. The house sits in a quiet and laid back landscape village, yet easily accessible to bus and railway transits, amenities and food outlets.

The space
This cottage called 'Teratak Opah Kamunting' is divided into three distinct spaces all under one roof. The upper unit or the main house is called the 'Rumah Ibu'. This is the place where you as our guest will be staying. The lower unit or 'Rumah Bawah' is designated as a learning centre yet functions as a weekend studio for the host family. The back unit or 'Rumah Dapur' is a rented space. All three units serve a united core that reflects the Malay kampung house living, thus provide a good experience of the Malay tradition.

Kamunting, Perak, Malaysia

The place is situated in a friendly kampung, very near to town. You will feel like going back to nature where you can listen to birds chirping, the sounds of chicken and crickets. The street light in front of the house that brightens the road will make you feel secure and safe.

Hi, I am Kamarul, who lives in Shah Alam, in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. Have retired from academic field. I taught landscape architecture and park and recreation management at Universiti Teknologi Mara. I have a wife and three grown up children. In the past, we have enjoyed living and studying in the US, UK and Australia for more than 7 years in addition to our home country, Malaysia. During those times, we have learned to appreciate and respect different kinds of values and the diversity of cultures and people. I listed this traditional kampung house in the state of Perak for travellers to enjoy because that is how I believe people will get to know the District of Larut Matang and Selama. My home-town Taiping, or everlasting peace, is rich in heritage, history and culture. We like to meet new friends. Hopefully by hosting this traditional house we will meet friends and build relationships. Selamat Datang!
