Syracuse, Sicily, Italy

From a charm of a painting of Caravaggio or Antonello da Messina to a relaxing dip in the crystal clear sea; from the mighty columns of a greek temple to the magic of a fiery red sunset enjoyed with a glass of Nero d'Avola.
This is Syracuse.
In the 734 BCE, colonist sailed the Ionian sea from Corinth to the island, where they founded the city of Syracuse. It became the capital of Magna Grecia, so powerful that it challenged and defeated Athens.
A UNESCO world Heritage Site and the 4th most important city for art in Italy because of its cultural wealth.
To quote Vincenzo Consolo, Syracuse is " the dense and valuable juxtaposition of a monument and a myth, a symbol within a symbol; a religion and a civilization, a culture within a culture.
Syracuse is and enchanted place, an extraordinary heritage increasingly accessible to the disabled, through “tourism for all” projects. Amidst architecture erected after the devastating earthquake of 1693, the Duomo is part of the history of Syracuse. Originally a temple to Athena - the Doric columns of the Greek structure can still be seen - and a Paleo-Christian church under the Byzantines, it was enhanced in the early 18th century with a Baroque façade. Not far away are the Fountain of Arethusa, the Temple of Apollo from the 6th century BCE, the Maniace Castle reworked by Frederick II, the Jewish Quarter, the Bellomo Museum with the “Annunciation” by Antonello, and the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia, which houses the “Burial of Saint Lucy” by Caravaggio.
The city has an ancestral relationship with the sea. This link has been strengthened by building solariums in the city that evoke local memories: Forte Vigliena, Cala Rossa, Sbarcadero Santa Lucia and “Due Frati” (two friars). The famous beach resorts on the south coast, from the marine reserve at Plemmirio (praised in Virgil’s Aeneid) to Fontane Bianche and Arenella, are thus joined by “the sea in the city”, in close contact with monuments to an altogether unique history.
Back on Ortygia, revel in the kaleidoscope of colours, scents and flavours at the ancient market in Via De Benedictis, where you can stock up on local products or pause for a snack.
Syracuse is one of the major classical culture centres in the world and a favourite destination for theatre lovers. Classical performances by the Inda Foundation, in the Greek Theatre (15 May-28 June), The Greek Theatre also hosts the Euro Mediterranean Festival beginning on the 11th with Lyric productions.
