Missile Silo Adventure Camping, sleeping under the stars!

What better way to experience life in the Smoky Hills of Kansas than primitive camping at a former Missile Base.

Here we are repurposing an abandoned Missile Base into an Adventure Resort.

Learn about the first rockets that brought us to the Space-Age.

Missile Base Tours

1 hr historical tour of the Atlas F Missile Base including the underground bunker is available for $20 for adults, $15 for veterans & $10 for children.

The space
We are currently doing construction on the underground Missile Base and spend our weekends working and camping with our dog Buddy. Your stay will help fund this unique project.

The property is located in the Smoky Hills of Kansas near Lake Wilson, with everything from fishing, hiking, biking, kite-boarding and more nearby.

You will have 24 acres to roam, with walking paths going around the property, and several campsites to choose from for privacy or views.

We encourage leave-no-trace hammock camping, though if you prefer to bring your own tent, tipi, yurt, hammock or just a sleeping roll feel free.

This is primitive camping so come prepared for an adventure.

The Ad Astra S.T.E.A.M. Institute is a nonprofit focused on designing disaster resilience into the home.

We are building the nonprofits headquarters inside of a decommissioned underground Atlas F Missile Base. Here you will get to learn about Space-Age technologies which will produce fresh food, clean air, pure water, consistent energy, as well as health/medical systems all designed into the home.

The Atlas F Missile Base was built in the late '50's and early '60's, activated in 1961 and, after a short operational period, were decommissioned in 1965. These were the first of the "super hardened" missile silos, built to withstand a nearby Nuclear blast. These are some of the most hardened structures man has ever built. Construction costs (structure only) range from $12-18 million in 1960's dollars; in today's equivalent, that would be over $100 Million dollars!

General Layout & Features
Launch Control Center (LCC)
The LCC is a smaller cylindrical underground chamber with two stories. It housed the launch control center and the barracks. It was connected to the Missile Silo with a 40' tunnel. Today, this is the area that holds promise for development into a home or other usable space.

Missile Silo
The missile silo is a huge structure with a 52' inside diameter and is approximately 180' deep. The silo has three blast doors leading from the LCC. To launch the missile, two overhead 90-ton doors would be opened hydraulically. Originally, there were seven floors built inside the silo. Today, most of the Atlas F silos have been salvaged leaving only the structural walls. One way the silos are now being developed is to rebuild some or all of the floors. Each level would have approximately 2,000 square feet.

Where you’ll be

Wilson, Kansas, United States

The Wilson community promotes itself as the "Czech Capital of Kansas" due to the role of Czech immigrant settlers in its early history. It also has the largest Czech Egg in the World.

We are located in the Wind Belt of America, and are surrounded by a 250 MW windfarm.

Lake Wilson is a 9,000 acre Army Corps of Engineers Reservoir. It is listed as one of the largest and cleanest lakes in the State of Kansas.
Do to the consistent winds this Lake is a gem for sailing and kite-boarding enthusiast.

Next to the lake are Epic rated bike trails, a couple beaches, and over 8,000 acres of wilderness open for hiking and hunting.

Life is an Adventure! Ad Astra Per Aspera. "To the Stars through Difficulties" A little about me, I'm 40 years old, and have traveled to over 20 countries around the world. I have a degree in International Business, with an emphasis on Hospitality. One of my first adventures at around 10 years old, I went exploring through the Flint Hills with a friend and found a former underground Missile Base just a couple miles from my home. Now close to 25 years later I own an Atlas F Missile Silo which we plan on converting into an Adventure Resort and nonprofit headquarters for the Ad Astra S.T.E.A.M. Institute. Over the years I have worked as a Manager and Night Auditor at the Shelter City Youth Hostel in Amsterdam, The Keeter Center Lodge in the Ozarks near Table Rock Lake, and The Timberline Ski Lodge on Mt. Hood Oregon. I do custom woodworking with my father who lives next door, as a day job. I enjoy building Fireplaces, Kitchens, ManCaves, and more. One of my favorite jobs to date was to build a custom Library for the Survival Condo Project, an Atlas F Missile Silo converted into a 15-floor, 55,000 sq. ft. underground condomium complex. I love obstacle course racing, and have competed in NBC's American Ninja Warrior.
