This recently renovated, terraced house is one minute's walk from Schull's Main Street with its assortment of shops, pubs, galleries and restaurants. Providing stylish and airy accommodation, the house can be found at the start of the Colla Road in a quiet and convenient location with easy parking. This is the perfect bolthole for exploring all that West Cork has to offer with walking, sailing, cycling and island-hopping all easily accessible.

The space
On entering the house, you will find the ground floor in an open plan layout with designated sitting, dining and kitchen areas, with plenty of space for six people. The house has been well insulated, but is also provided with electric panel heaters and a wood burner for chillier days. The kitchen has an oven, hob, microwave and fridge freezer and is supplied with pots and pans, glasses, plates and cutlery. Upstairs there is a family bathroom, a double bedroom with compact en-suite shower room, a second double bedroom with basin and vanity unit and a bunk room, all with ample hanging space. There is a small patio area to the rear of the house with a table and six chairs suitable for eating al fresco.

Where you’ll be

Schull, County Cork, Ireland

The location of Celtic Cottages at the start of the Colla Road is the perfect compromise between being situated right in the centre of the village with the noise and parking problems that can present and being stuck further out and having to get in the car when you have forgotten the milk! Turn left out of the house and within a few minutes you will find the well-stocked supermarket, the post office, library and other shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs of this charming harbour village. There is even a planetarium! From April to October, the Schull Country Fair is held on Sunday mornings and offers the opportunity to buy local crafts and produce. Likewise, at the pier during the summer months, you can enjoy fresh fish at L'Escale restaurant or buy it to take home for later. Turn right out of the house and a walk along the lovely Colla Road will lead you to Colla Pier where you can take a boat across a short stretch of water to Long Island and perhaps enjoy a picnic and walk around the island. Alternatively, this is the starting point for a number of walks including the Colla Loop. Take the small diversion up to Sailor's Hill and reflect on the power and majesty of the sea at the memorial for those who have lost their lives whilst taking in the wonderful views to Long Island and beyond to the Fastnet Lighthouse.

Exploring the harbourside will lead you to the playground and tennis courts, but what Schull is best known for is its water sports including swimming, diving, kayaking, sea angling and, of course, sailing. The natural harbour forms part of Roaringwater Bay, a stunning stretch of coastline with islands scattered throughout offering the sailor plenty of scope for adventure. If you prefer to stay on dry land, the quiet roads of the Mizen and Sheep's Head peninsulas are perfect for cyling. The countryside is dotted with monuments and ruined castles and there is a wide choice of beaches including the Blue Flag beach at Barley Cove along the coast as well as plenty of smaller beaches and coves where you can swim and relax.

No village would be complete without a pub and Schull has a few to choose from. Hackett's in Main Street is a tiny pub crammed with atmosphere and is a regular venue for local musicians. The Townhouse O D's is a recently opened bar and restaurant serving good food and Nico's Restaurant is soon to open having progressed from an excellent street food stall. The New Haven can pretty much always be relied on to be open when other places are shut and offers a range of food from pizzas to seafood. Sometimes it's nice to start the day with breakfast out and Nickie's is where people head. Located at the other end of Main Street, just beyond Schull Harbour Hotel, Nickie's is a friendly little joint where you can sit at a table on the pavement and watch the world go by or just enjoy the sun sparkling on the sea.

If you are after a 'get away from it all' holiday, Schull is the answer. You can take advantage of all the pubs and restaurants at a stone's throw and in the surrounding villages or just chill out, explore the area and return in the evening, full of fresh air, to a comfortable house and a cosy dinner at home.
