The space
The Lookout Quay Street St Ives Cornwall TR261PT

Sitting directly on the harbour beach, The Lookout is a charming, traditional 17th Century fisherman's cottage, and one of the earliest built in St Ives. With the sandy harbour beach - arguably the loveliest and most iconic spot in the little town - quite literally on its doorstep, and south-facing panoramic harbour views from every window, The Lookout is a characterful cottage at the very heart of St Ives.

One of only three cottages that sit directly on the harbour beach in St Ives, The Lookout is a really special little house in an unparalleled location in the area. Its character charm, however, is what makes it totally unique. Originally built in the 1700s, and having been largely untouched for the last century (but for the odd essential update and a few new furnishings), The Lookout is a rare treasure in Cornwall, ideal for a break away from it all. There are uneven floorboards, the historic kitchen floor slopes away, and you'll need to duck when going down the tiny staircase. So what it lacks in the odd mod con (such as Wifi and a washing machine) it makes up for in charm, in abundance, and is one of the reasons our guests often come back year on year. Please can you take extra care of the wooden worktop in the kitchen as it is oiled wood and no hot pans must be placed on it. It follows the shape of the old tree it was made from and would be hard to replace. There are two skillets there for hot plans plus two work boards for any food preparation. Also please put nothing but water down the kitchen sink as we have to pump the water up to the road level (part of the cottages quirkiness)

Covid Information
We understand your holiday is going to be slightly different due to the current circumstances. Therefore, we wanted to make sure you feel safe and prepared for your trip. There are a few things that we need to ask you to do that we wouldn’t in normal times and we hope you understand.
We have put together the information below to explain what steps we have taken to prepare The Lookout, as well as some handy tips on ways you can holiday safely whilst you are on holiday here in St Ives.

Extra property precautions
Our normal changeover cleans are always vigorous. However, to be on the safe side we are extending our changeover hours to a 5pm arrival with a 9am departure to give our housekeepers plenty of time to be extra vigilant and carry out extra cleaning in accordance with industry guidelines for this current situation.

We have been advised we need to remove unnecessary soft furnishings such as throws and scatter cushions for now and any ornaments that are within reach of little ones as well as games, puzzles, the DVD recorder, books and similar. Please can you bring any games that you might want and any special cushions or throws that you might want to use.

Please note that although the cottage would, at a pinch, house two couples, it is a very small cottage and better suited for 4 people in the same family. We wouldn't really recommend the sofa bed for adult sleeping as it has been provided with children in mind. On this note, while we provide a duvet and pillows for the sofa bed, duvet covers, sheets and pillow cases are not provided and guests are required to set up the sofa bed themselves. The one bathroom is accessed through the main bedroom, so please bear this in mind if booking as a party of two couples.

What to do before you set off for your holiday
Please bring with you enough initial supplies for your stay for the first few days. We have a fantastic little local shop around the corner towards The Tate Gallery called Norway Stores and of course the fantastic two Co Ops in town that stock a big selection of items. This also means you can relax into your holiday as soon as you arrive. There is too the Allotment Deli in Fore Street that has all sorts of fresh and locally made goodies. St Ives Bakery along the same street does bake the best bread in town, though that is purely my opinion! One bottle of antibacterial handwash will be left in the kitchen for your use only. Please bring any condiments tea coffe that you wish to use as we have been advised to leave nothing like that at the property as might usually be there.

Many restaurants, pubs, and cafes in St Ives have adapted their service so you can get take away food but hopefully by your stay there will be cafes and restaurants open. Porthmeor Beach have a lovely take away on the beach as does the little café on Porthgwidden Beach both only a few minutes away from The Lookout. Don’t forget the amazing sunsets on Porthmeor Beach!

If you or any member of your party start to develop symptoms before your holiday it is important that you contact us right away to let us know. Please contact me if there are any problems If you have symptoms, please only travel if you have been tested and are shown to be negative. Please can you also inform us if you develop any symptoms whilst at your stay with us.

St Ives implemented an emergency plan last summer which was a one way system and in the peak summer months closed off the road along the front to cars between certain times. This might happen again this summer but we dont know yet.

Before you return home
Linen care. We wouldn’t normally ask but please strip the beds and place linen and towels in the bags provided. Plus the tea towel but please make sure not to strip the mattress protectors as these will be lost completely. This will really help to protect our housekeepers and is an important necessity in this current climate. Please also if the weather is fine can you open several of the windows to allow airing of the property before you leave.
Please can you also put as much in the dishwasher before you leave and let it run. All items need to be put through before the next guests arrive and this will help our housekeeper get The Lookout ready in time.

Waste.
Please empty all bins and remove food items before you leave. There is no room for a green bin at The Lookout so please can you get rid of rubbish little and often. Recycling of bottles - the local two Co Ops take bottles or there is a bottle bank at the leisure centre at top of the town.

Your belongings.
Please double check you have all of your personal possessions before you leave. Please don’t leave rubbish or food at the property when you leave as this will put extra pressure on our housekeeper.

And finally - we wish you all a fantastic holiday at The Lookout

With fantastic restaurants, cafe's, shops, bars and galleries just a stone's throw away, it's in the ideal location for accessing everything St Ives has to offer. Take a boat trip to Seal Island, visit The Tate, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Leach Pottery, go surfing (or join the surf school!), wander round the shops and galleries, or enjoy breathtaking views walking the coastal path to Zennor (and reward yourself with lunch in The Tinner's arms). Then come back to The Lookout and watch the tide come in with a glass on your private beach patio.
