Where you’ll be

Södermalm, Stockholms län, Sweden

The Old Town is one of Europe's largest and best preserved medieval centres and one of Stockholm's main attractions. It was here that Stockholm was founded in 1252.

The entire Old Town and adjacent Riddarholmen is like a living and walking museum, filled with attractions, restaurants, cafés, bars and shopping. Old Town is also popular for those looking for crafts, curiosities and souvenirs. The narrow, winding cobblestone alleys with houses in all yellow shades have given Old Town a unique character. Behind the visible facades you can still find cellar vaults and medieval paintings. And on snowy winter days, the neighborhood feels like a fairy tale book. The Old Town has several beautiful churches and museums. Here you will find, among other things, Sweden's National Cathedral, the Grand Church and the Nobel Prize Museum. Most of the district's attractions are the Royal Palace of Stockholm, one of the world's largest castles with over 600 rooms. In addition to the representative floors, there are several interesting museums at the Castle, including the Armoured Life Chamber, with royal costumes and armor. Don't miss the guard parade and the daily shift relief. Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan are the main streets of the district. Inside them, along the current Priesthood Street, was the city wall that once surrounded the city. In the middle of the Old Town is Stortorget, Stockholm's oldest square, the central point and from it goes Köpmangatan, Stockholm's oldest street, mentioned already in the 1300s. Marten Trotzig's alley is hard to find. It's Old Town's narrowest alley, only 90 centimeters in the narrowest place. Also, don't miss Riddarholmen and Riddarholm Church. The church is a royal funeral church that was erected as a Franciscan monastery for the so-called Grey Brotherhood monks in the 1200s.
