The space
This new listing is an architecturally unique house decorated with local arts and crafts and built using traditional materials supplemented with modern day eco home comforts.

The house is divided in two. Seamus and Fiona and family live permanently in the original 1906 building, while the rented separate house comprises an adjoining part which was completed in 1910. Originally, this was built as an artist’s studio for George Kennedy, with music room which housed an organ (sadly smashed in the ‘troubles’), an oratory, and a garage for their Hudson car. This part of the house has recently been sympathetically renovated and comprises living room, two double bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, and utility room. A soundproof door connects it to the rest of the house, but this is kept locked during rental periods, and the guest accommodation is accessed with its own front door.

The house was designed by the architect George Kennedy and built in 1906 on land that his family had purchased circa 1840. This was the first house he designed, influenced by Irish vernacular but also clearly inspired by French and Italianate architecture as evident in the detailing. He went on to design many notable buildings, mainly in Britain. He has subsequently become known as ‘The Bloomsbury Architect’ because of his associations with the Bloomsbury literary circle in England. Inspired by the idyllic location surrounded by mountains, close to the sea and with its own lake, George Kennedy’s artist friends such as Henry Lamb, Reginald Brill, Randolph Schwabe and others spent holidays in the house and painted local scenes.

Gortahork, County Donegal, Ireland

The house is surrounded by idyllic countryside, perfect for hillwalking with Errigal, the highest mountain in County Donegal 5 Km to the south and beautiful beaches 5 Km to the north.

The surroundings comprise three acres of fairly impenetrable areas of rhododendron, but also some more open areas of garden, a stream, and a small lake with brown trout, which visitors are welcome to fish. Visitors have to bring their own fishing gear.

I am a biologist; my husband Seamus is a sculptor and we have two children John and Sarah. I have travelled extensively for work, as has Seamus. But we are now very fortunate to live in a beautiful remote location in Donegal, with a lake and surrounded by hills.

During your stay

We live next door. You have your own privacy. But we are there if you need anything!

During the ‘Irish Troubles’ in the years around 1920 the house was occupied by both the notorious British ‘Black ‘n Tans’ and the I.R.A. (Irish Republican Army). Although much damage was done to the interior of the house during these times of strife, thankfully the building remained intact.

The house was used mainly for holidays for the Kennedy family and their friends until 1970, when Gilbert and Teresa Kennedy and their family left Kenya and took up permanent residence. They were instrumental in nurturing a vibrant arts environment in the locality. Five years ago the house passed to Seamus and his wife Fiona. The house has recently been extensively renovated while keeping the character of the original house intact.
