Great location
95% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating.
'Atatū' means "after sunrise" - our favourite time at the property - the sun travels across the sea to outline the hills and all is peaceful.

It's a great base for outdoor adventures, wine tasting, olive grove picnics, art gallery visits or delicious meals and craft beer in NZ's oldest pub, the Moutere Inn.

A glorious swimming pool and spa awaits you. The well-specced kitchen and BBQ ensure you'll have all you need to prepare sumptuous meals to complete your Nelson experience!

The space
Atatū sleeps eight people in four bedrooms with 3.5 bathrooms. (Complimentary Port-a-Cot available on request.)

The furniture reflects our many years living in Asia - a combination of Bali meets China, with some modern pieces thrown in.

Apart from lovely bed linen and fluffy towels, you’ll find waffle weave bathrobes in your room - perfect for your meander to the coffee machine in the morning before curling up on the daybed on the outside terrace, enjoying the birdsong and view, while planning your adventures for the day. Or, of course, as you make your way to the swimming pool and spa pool after a busy day of activities.

The home is always warm and cosy in colder months. We have central heating with radiators in each room, there is a heat pump in the kitchen and a fire in the living room.

There is flexible check-in with a key safe/lock box. We'll send you the code for your stay in the Atatū PDF.

There is a washer and dryer should you need it.

We only use environmentally friendly cleaning and body care products.

It's a wonderful space to hang out with family and friends. Enjoy!

Where you’ll be

Upper Moutere, Tasman, New Zealand

Atatū is close to some of the best outdoor and culinary experiences New Zealand has to offer, but without thronging tourist crowds.

German settlers arrived in the Moutere about 175 years ago and started its reputation for high quality artisanal products. There are vineyards, art galleries, cheese makers, olive oil producers, organic skin product creators, mushroom and berry growers to name a few. An annual local highlight is the Moutere Artisans Day on Labour Weekend or the Sarau Festival the weekend before Anniversary Weekend - see their websites for details - celebrating fabulous local produce with open workshops, cool events and music!

If you don’t feel like cooking, the Moutere Inn, the oldest pub in New Zealand, is only a 7-minute drive away. They have great craft beer, all their wines are sourced within 10 km of the Inn and their food is delicious. The Moutere Hills vineyard (12 minutes drive) also has Forsters, a very good restaurant for lunch or dinner. Kahurangi Estate Wines has Tastology - providing a delicious range of local foods to accompany your wine tasting or to take back home. In 16 minutes' drive, you can reach the delicious water-front dining and art galleries in Mapua.

Nelson airport is only 30 minutes away by car.

We can put you in touch with scenic trips and fly fishing excursions run by an experienced local helicopter pilot. He knows the property well (he used to live there!) and can land on your drive to whisk you away.

Atatū is 5 km from the Tasman Great Taste Biking Trail (the Dovedale / Neudorf turnoff). We are in a great location if you want to do the circular bike route in stages and have a short break at Atatū to enjoy the Moutere.

Our Guide to Atatū also contains tips for some of the many, many adventure and culinary highlights for visitors exploring the region. In addition, there is a Lonely Planet Guidebook to the South Island at the house, as well as many brochures to browse through.

We hope you have an incredible stay.

We are a New Zealand - Austrian family who has lived and worked in Bangkok, Zurich and Singapore over the last 20 years before returning to New Zealand just before Covid hit. A lot of furniture in Atatū was picked up during our travels. We love being back in New Zealand, getting reacquainted with some of its gorgeous spots - but we also love to get back to Atatū whenever we can.
