Enjoy the serenity of this stunning traditional cottage set in an extensive private and mature garden with fabulous sweeping views of mountains and Glen Lough. Although totally secluded, Carraig Cottage is ideally situated - close to breath taking beaches and coastline, romantic mountains and lakeside walks, award winning golf courses and restaurants, welcoming local pubs, outdoor activities for all the family including cycling, horse riding, a wide range of water sports and excellent fishing.

The space
Carraig Cottage is set in its own grounds, set well back from the main road, along a tree lined path and through gates to ample parking and 2 acres of mature gardens with meadow, fruit trees, stream, outdoor seating area and a wide lawn with amazing views. Although traditional, the cottage is spacious and full of light and offers excellent accommodation for families and groups. The large hallway opens to a superbly equipped kitchen with every modern amenity and a large dining room seating 8 comfortably and with stunning views of the garden and lough and mountains. The beautifully furnished living room and conservatory also offer wonderful views, ample seating where guests can relax by the open fire (logs and turf provided) and enjoy the wide range of books, DVDs, TV and board games and music provided. There is an additional well equipped pantry and utility room with washing machine and airing cupboard which doubles as an excellent drying room. The cottage has 3 large and comfortable bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, including a bath and 2 showers and is tastefully decorated and furnished with antique and contemporary furniture, beautiful art work and a mixture of antique wooden flooring, traditional slate flooring, rugs and comfortable carpeting. In colder months the spacious cottage is a warm, cosy retreat; in summer months the superb garden to front, back and sides offers total privacy, seclusion, a large lawn, lots of space for children to run, explore and play safely and teak garden furniture with comfortable cushions for outdoor relaxation and eating. The gardens are accessed from the kitchen and conservatory (with French doors) as well as from the beautiful entrance. The master bedroom with a luxurious super king bed and antique furniture has stunning views of Glen Lough with double windows opening to the flowers and mature Donegal fauna of the sweeping front garden and lawn. Both other bedrooms offer windows with views of the multiple tree lined side and rear gardens with a variety of fruit and herbs. The grounds of Carraig Cottage attracts wildlife of all varieties - you wake to bird song and the area is a birdwatcher's delight. At dawn and dusk you are likely to see wild hares, red deer and even the occasional badger! Oil central heating is included, there are cushions, blankets, extra duvets, superb cotton bedding and every amenity for a true home from home experience. We also offer a cot for families and as all the accommodation is on the ground floor with wide doorways the cottage is also accessible for those with mobility issues.

Where you’ll be

County Donegal, Ireland

Carraig Cottage is minutes from the wild atlantic way and a variety of huge stunning beaches and wonderful cliff scenery. You can walk to mountains and the lough from the front door and Glenveagh national park and the Derryveagh mountains are a 15 minute drive through stunning scenery. The local 18th century pub is 1 mile away (along the winding country road which hugs the lough shore line )and offers the warmest of Donegal welcomes for all the family and great food and Guinness. The Olde Glen Bar won the Irish pub of the year and hosts popular music evenings, festivals and events. There are a range of award winning restaurants in the area and this area of Donegal has become a go to destination for foodies. Local turf smoked salmon, locally brewed beers, Mulroy Bay mussels and scallops, venison and game and organic vegetables are widely available in local markets and are rightly famous. There are traditional bakeries and coffee shops minutes away. This area is steeped in buildings and areas of historic and cultural interest, from deserted famine cottages to castles and Georgian and Victorian architecture and the fine towns of Ramelton, Rathmullan which played such pivotal roles in Irish history. This area is part of the Gaeltacht and the Irish language still spoken and celebrated. There are irish crafts available from local artists and the rich indigenous culture still celebrated in music, story telling and poetry. The area is a mecca for bird watchers, cyclists, artists and musicians and offers the wamest of welcomes. Donegal has been called the 'coolest place on earth' by The Observer and this part of Donegal is right at the heart of the best of it all. Whether you want to: escape to wild empty beaches with crashing Atlantic waves; or climb stunning local mountains with breahtaking views; or nestle in the local snug with the friendliest of locals, fiddle music and great craic; or immerse yourself in the fine traditions of this proud and beautiful area, you are sure to return home well rested. John B Keane said 'time slows' here. You are sure to return home well rested.

2 local stables offer horse riding on the beaches, pony trekking and longer hikes and the local rivers and loughs offer excellent salmon and trout fishing. Downings and Dunfanaghy are both a short drive away and offer surfing, kayaking, sea fishing, kite surfing and wind surfing. World class golf courses abound in this area and Rosapenna (with 2 superb links courses) is virtually on the doorstep.

I am an Irish woman who has owned and enjoyed this cottage for over twenty years. I am a writer who lives mostly in London but try to get to Donegal as often as I can. Along with my sister and brother in law we developed the grounds of the property and developed a garden which is full of tradional plants and trees, including heritage fruot trees. We wwre able to acquire the local adjacent meadow to prevent further any potential building and damage to the local eco system. I am a keen walker, foodie and historian and my family include keen cyclists, passionate golfers, talented gardeners and carzy wild water swimmers - from teenagers to OAPs. We ahev created in this part of Donegal the home with all the things we love and we hope you love this wonderful area and cottage as much we do.
