The space
The room is basic but clean with a bed big enough for two, fresh bedding provided. There is electricity so there is light and you can charge your equipment. We have no water inside but the is a running cold water tap outside.
I can provide hot water on request, for washing and a large basin for traditional shower.
I have just begun building a shower cubicle outside next to the guests bedroom!
We have 2 traditional toilets in the compound shared with our neighbours. A European shower and toilet can also be organised if necessary with the nearby hotel.

Where you’ll be

Lalibela, Amhara, Ethiopia

The churches are the obvious thing people come to see, and they are amazing!
But lalibela (which means honey eater) also has so much more to offer! Every Saturday there is a huge market yhat sells everything, we also have small galleries and museums.
There is music and dancing almost every night, torpedo is very popular to experience traditional song dance and tej (honey wine).
The surrounding mountains are breath taking, from here my brother can take you to abune yosef; a 3 or 4 day trek to the third highest peak in Ethiopia! Or for those on a short stay, he can guide you to asheton mountain to find the open heart baboons or to asheton Maryam to visit our beautiful mountain church (both are 1 day treks)

Hi, my name is Mengesha.

During your stay

I like to welcome my guests with a traditional coffee ceremony and talla (local beer that I make myself). My children love to learn and play with guests, it is good for them to develop their English. You are welcome to spend all day with my family, or if you feel like exploring and would like some guidance, my brother who speaks good English can show you around town. He is also a trekking guide for the more adventurous guests!
