Where you’ll be

Helsinki, Finland

Punavuori is a district in the southwestern part of downtown Helsinki. It is known for its neighbourhood shops, community atmosphere, and lively feeling. The area is Helsinki's most densely inhabited district and especially popular amongst young adults and families with small children.

The name Punavuori ('Red Mountain') refers to the red-hued rocks found in the area. Today some 9,000 residents call Punavuori home. The streetscape is diverse: old industrial buildings turned into offices and apartments and with art nouveau stone castles, neo-Renaissance houses, and functionalist building blocks all cohabiting in harmony. The district has also retained some of its old wooden housing blocks.

For many, the attraction of Punavuori is the abundance of design and fashion boutiques, restaurants and bars. A great number of the Design District shops are to be found here.

A landmark in the area is the 500-metre-long Iso Roobertinkatu pedestrian street, colloquially known as Roba. Popular sights include the Mikael Agricola Church designed by famed architect Lars Sonck, the former dock area Telakkaranta, one of the most popular parks in the city, Sinebrychoff Park, as well as the Sinebrychoff Art Museum – both carry the name of the local beer brewing dynasty.
