Located in the historic Mount Airy section of Philadelphia, this beautifully updated Victorian carriage house has everything you will need. Stay in an 1,100 square foot, two-floor, private apartment with a separate entrance with keypad lock. The light and airy open floorplan features high ceilings, red pine floors, numerous architectural details, a comfortable king-sized bed, essentials plus added amenities, and carefully chosen décor. You will feel so at home that you will not want to leave.

The space
You will have the entire apartment to yourself. The first floor is open-concept with a large kitchen with front facing windows that connects to a dining area and living room centered around a brick fireplace with Mercer Tiles and a 55” LCD TV with Amazon Fire TV and an HDMI connector. The first-floor couch folds flat into a full-sized bed suitable for children.

The second floor has a spacious bedroom with great natural light, a built-in bookshelf, Bowes Wave audio player, built-in storage for luggage, and a hanging closet. The bathroom is also on the second floor and features a claw foot tub and shower plus a full-sized washer and dryer stack.

This apartment is perfect for couples looking to get away and business travelers and is listed for two adults, but the first-floor sofa bed is also fine for children. If you are traveling with children, please let us know and understand that there is a $20 surcharge per additional guest over two adults and that maximum occupancy is two adults and two children.

This apartment is part of two historic buildings from 1890 that were later combined and includes the carriage house, a private apartment on the third floor of the carriage house (that is accessed through the main house), and the main house next door, which is occupied by your host.

The house is both elevated from street level by 12-steps and sits back 30-feet from the sidewalk. Trees surround the property and it is both quiet and private. You will have access to a side yard equipped with a patio set.

Fun Fact: This house has been good luck for authors! It was the residence of the writer William Hughes Mearns who wrote the well-known poem Antigonish here in 1899 and much later of Adam Mansbach who wrote the children’s book (for adults) Go the F**k to Sleep here in 2010.

Where you’ll be

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

Mount Airy is a vibrant neighborhood in the Northwest of Philadelphia known for its culturally diverse community and varied architectural styles.

The cobbled Germantown Avenue, with its charming shops, cafés and bakeries runs through Germantown, Mount Airy, and Chestnut Hill like Main Street in a small town. Mount Airy can feel like a city within the city and offers diverse options for dining and shopping many of which are independent and unique to the area.

The house is one block from the avenue and the most populous strip of “Downtown Mount Airy” that includes local favorites Earth Bread and Brewery with great wood oven pizza, McMenamin’s Tavern with truly good pub fare and a huge draft selection, Trattoria Moma BYOB Italian, Jyoti for Indian, Mi Puebla for Mexican and too many more to mention.

There is also a great gym -FitLife- and easy access to trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding through Wissahickon Valley Park. Several art galleries dot the neighborhood, and the English-style Awbury Arboretum has flowering meadows and a secret garden just five minutes away.

I am a working artist and MFA candidate at PAFA living in Philadelphia, PA with my husband Chris, our two kids, my mother-in-law, and one dog and one cat! I am a Philadelphia native, but spent a lot of time elsewhere including a year in Rome and 13 years in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Chris and I like to travel and sail and we keep a boat on the Sassafras River off the Chesapeake Bay that we pretend we live on when it's warm enough : ) I'm new to hosting and am really excited to be doing it. We have always spent a lot of time and energy on designing pleasant usable spaces and it's something that we really enjoy. We hope you'll like the space that we made to share!
