A traditional roundhouse , attached to the music school, with a simple double bed, desk and chairs, electricity and bathroom. It is ideal for taking lessons and courses at the school ( though not essential) in a quiet suburb of Gunjur , opposite the mosque. You’ll be awoken by the call to prayer and gentle chorus of birds, donkeys, goats.Local food served either in your room or communally . A culturally immersive experience where you can absorb the mandinka griotte traditions .

The space
Your Roundhouse Lodge is part of the School of traditional Gambian music - Kora, Balafon, Djembe, singing and dance- run by Griotte Yankuba Conteh and family. It is a large, traditional roundhouse set within the family compound where local children and adults learn and practice music. Lessons and courses booked seperately . Foreign students are vital for the school continuation as there is no government funding and local children are taught for free.

Where you’ll be

Missera, Gunjur, West coast region, Gambia

Set in a small village just outside Gunjur called Missera, with a scattering of sandy tracks and compounds or homesteads and little shops and street food, people are incredibly friendly, you'll feel safe yet completely off the beaten track. The school was founded in 2015 by Jali Yankuba Conteh and Katuš Young after they raised the funds to build it on their Arts Council sponsored UK tour. Foreign students and guests are vital to keep it running.

Just over an hour from the airport.
Plenty of local attractions, such as a snake farm, crocodiles, bird watching by dug out canoe, canoeing, visiting the camel park, or go up river hippo spotting.. aswell as the many naming ceremonies or gigs which many of the Conteh family seem to attend or perform at each week.
