This fascinating small castle is close to the River Tummel, where you can fish for trout in season, and is full of character with a view over the river to Schiehallion mountain. Down by the riverbank there is a bonfire site where you can gather fallen branches and sit around the camp fire of an evening with family and friends. The garden is unenclosed so, being close to the river, small children should be supervised at all times. Dogs should be supervised when outside. There is a lovely walk along the river to the first hydro electric dam built in Scotland in the 1930s.

The space
The house sleeps 8 in four bedrooms. On the ground floor, which is up some steps, there is a sitting room with sofas and easy chairs, TV and DVD player. Off this is the kitchen/dining room with all modern equipment. There is a twin bedroom with a shower/wet room adjacent with heated floor. On the first floor there is a small twin bedroom, a family bathroom with bath with shower over, basin and WC, and there is the master bedroom in the tower, overlooking the river, with four-poster bed. Off this is a steep, narrow stairs (curtained off from the main room) to the top tower room which has twin beds and wonderful views from the windows.

Where you’ll be

Kinloch Rannoch, United Kingdom

The area is a National Scenic Area with wonderful ancient pine forests, several lochs, magnificent hills and mountains to climb and excellent walking country. Very central for visiting attractions of all kinds in Scotland.
Dunalastair Estate is a large family-owned and run highland estate only two hours from Edinburgh and Glasgow. There are three lochs: Loch Tummel, Dunalastair Water and Loch Rannoch in the Rannoch area. The road goes west as far as Rannoch Station, the end of the road, where there is a famous tea room on the station platform. You can take a day-trip by train from here to Mallaig along the West Highland Line made famous by the Harry Potter films. The Rannoch area contains wild hills, birch woods, a remnant of the ancient Caledonian pine forest and an abundance of wildlife much of it quite rare, such as red squirrel, pine marten, otters, osprey, eagles, deer and much more. This is a very unspoilt area with quiet roads and lots of places to walk and cycle.
