The space
This sauna cottage is located at Sunwell Farm Cabin Retreat in the quiet village of Kärde and was inspired by the Tiny House movement. Tiny houses come in all shapes, sizes, and forms, but they all enable simpler living in a smaller, more efficient space - the Joy of Living with Less. The movement is centered around desires of modesty and conservation, in addition to environmental consciousness, self-sufficiency, and wanting a life of adventure. Small houses emphasize design over size, utilize dual purpose features and multi-functional furniture, and incorporate technological advances of space saving equipment and appliances. Vertical space optimization is also a common feature of small houses. In the sauna cottage, the sleeping area has been brought into the space under the ceiling. The sleeping loft has a opening window equipped with a mosquito net to allow in daylight and all the fresh air needed for a comfortable sleep.

The wood-heated sauna stove produces soft heat and smooth steam, making the the sauna experience a very pleasant one.

*****In order to keep the wooden surfaces in the sauna's hot room fresh for every guest, we kindly ask you not to use a sauna whisk ('viht'). *****

Where you’ll be

Kärde, Jõgeva County, Estonia

Sunwell Farm Cabin Retreat in Kärde is a km away from historic Piibe road (road 39) and exactly half way between Tartu and Rakvere. There are daily buses from Tallinn via Rakvere and from Tartu (get off at "Kärde" stop and walk 2 km) and daily trains from Tallinn and Tartu/Valga to Jõgeva or Vägeva which you can combine with our transfer service. Nearest grocery store and clinic are 4 km away, a lake suitable for swimming and Endla Nature Reserve's visitors' center is 3 km away. Nearest town Jõgeva is 15 km away. Great central location for exploring Estonia.

Kärde is a small quiet village with epic views thanks to the elevation of up to 100 m (which in Estonia's standars is pretty high, lol). It's friendly locals are the proud inhabitants of 'Jõgeva county' s village of the year 2016'. The houses are located very sparsely, so there is plenty of privacy and connection with the nature and wildlife that thrives in the nature reserve nextby.

A day trip to Endla Nature Reserve (only a few km away) is a must! Experience its unique wellspring area, eight bog massifs, divided by rivers with narrow flooded meadows or swamped forests, marked hiking trail, boardwalks, various forest communities, wooded meadow and bogs, protected bird and plant species. Partly overlapping hiking trails allow everyone to choose a nature trip within one’s powers. The towers give a beautiful view of swamped lakes. Since 2004, it is one of the Natura 2000 bird and nature areas. Various campgrounds and picnic places in the area. Open 24 hours. Free of charge.

In Kärde you’ll find Kärde Peace House where the significant Russo-Swedish peace treaty of Kärde was signed in 1661. Kärde is located at an old, important postal road, close to Kärde hill with forest-covered Endla marsh behind it. Kärde park, the Peter’s stone and the so-called Peace-ditch are of further interest. Close by are many different lakes connected to old legends, like the lake Männika, which was supposed to be the dwell of Kalevipoeg and lake Endla, where supposedly the daughter of Vanemuine (epic Estonian figure) – Juta – used to live (there’s a Juta stone at the lakeside). Ask us for instructions to find them or book a private guided tour with us!

Visit Tooma Stud Farm (3 km away) and pet the world class trotters that are bred there. In Tooma there is also a lake for swimming.

Rent bicycles to explore the surroundings; a kayak for 2 for a trip to Lake Endla waterways (available from 30 June), fishing rods, a guided tour to Endla Nature Reserve.
