Awra Amba, Amhara, Ethiopia

Awra Amba was founded 47 years ago by the Zumru Nuru. As a child, Zumru questioned how traditional Ethiopian society discriminated against women and mistreated the elderly. He was driven by a conviction that things needed to change. At age 13, he left his home village to try to found a new society. For five years he traveled, trying to find others who shared his beliefs, before returning home. He spent the next three years working his family's farm, sharing the harvest with the less fortunate, and traveling again during the dry season. Finally, he found farmers near Gonder who not only supported his vision but were willing to donate 50 hectares of land to help him make it a reality. Awra Amba was born.

Today, Awra Amba continues to run in accordance to the vision that Zumru had as a child. Everyone in our village is treated as an equal, and the village is run by strictly democratic principles. Work is distributed according to each villager's skill rather than their gender, marriage below the age of 19 is banned, and girls are encouraged to attend school just as boys are. Awra Amba has attracted world-wide attention for its remarkable achievement of creating a self-sustaining society based on true equality.
