Magdalena del Mar, Peru

Magdalena is by far our favorite neighborhood in Lima, partly because of its great location (just a short bus or taxi ride to Miraflores, the airport or downtown), and partly because of its quiet atmosphere. Magdalena isn't a fun place when it comes to nightclubs and sightseeing, but it's the kind of place where your neighbors greet you on the street, where old couples take a stroll at night, where neighborhood kids play improvised soccer games on quiet streets.

Monuments

Immaculate Church Heart of Mary (corner of Sucre and July 28) is the main landmark of the neighborhood. The unique 5-story church and pink dome is visible from most of the neighborhood, especially at night when the church's facade is lit up. It is crowned with a statue of the Virgin Mary by the artist Ariquepeño Freddy Luque Sonco.

Magdalena's Malecón is a work in progress and although it's not as beautiful as Miraflores', it can be a nice place to take a sunset stroll; just avoid young couples and children cycling, as it seems to be a popular place to go when you're learning to miss the training wheels (take what you'll do). Lima is full of ancient temples, and Magdalena has its own, Huaca Huantille (in the corner of July 28 and Castile).
