Experience the charm of the 1847 Powhattan House South, the 3rd oldest house in Galveston. This beautiful Greek Revival style home is located 3 blocks from the beach and close to the Strand. Architectural details include 12' ceilings, private balcony, massive pocket doors, and so much more. It features 2 separate living spaces (1 up and 1 downstairs) each with its own private entrance. Currently the upstairs is available and is 1500 square feet with 2 BR, 1 Bath, full kitchen, living room.

The space
You will spend half of your vacation in the home you rent, so choose to stay in a place that is truly remarkable. Built 173 years ago, this massive old house displays the charm of yesteryear with the modern comforts of today. The rooms are large and spacious with 12' ceilings throughout the home. private upstairs front balcony, front porch, and so much more.

This house has an incredible and well documented history. ~It was originally built in 1847 by the mayor of Galveston John Sydnor. Sydnor famously tried to stop Sam Houston from speaking in Galveston. Later, it was owned by Stanley Spencer, who was the first recorded death from the 1900 Storm. Four photos exist of the house immediately after the 1900 Storm, showing the home virtually unscathed. A first-hand account of the Storm from inside this home was recorded in the book The Great Galveston Disaster by Paul Lester.

Our home is often compared to a museum, and we like that. It is filled with antiques and curiosities from the natural world, including fossils, geodes, gemstones, ancient artifacts, and more. This may be the only house on Airbnb where you can touch a 50,000 year old Woolly Mammoth tusk, hold the hand of an extinct Cave Bear, and touch bones of a 60 million year old Triceratops.

We personally greet every guest on arrival to show you around the house, help you get comfortable, and answer any questions you may have.
