Ngalawa are traditional trimaran dugouts used by Matemwe fishermen whose white lateen sails have graced our blue lagoon for centuries. We designed this ensuite bedroom as a tribute, indeed from the timbers of one we once sailed.

The space
Nyumba Safi stands on the site where we first built a small two room hut to sleep in as we watched Nyumba Kubwa grow. Before our eldest daughter's wedding, which took place on the beach in front of Utupoa, we renovated the place to make space for the groom's family. We called it Nyumba Safi, which sort of translates to 'The Fancy House', because, well, in-laws. The name stuck, and we are now delighted to share the house with you. There is a self-contained kitchen and dining area, a place to chill out and drink tea on the first floor, and the Zanzibar equivalent of an attic or den upstairs, beneath a makuti thatched roof, where there is a TV, computer, a sound system, and Joyce's favourite round, red couch.

Where you’ll be

Zanzibar, Zanzibar Urban/West, Tanzania

The most peaceful and dazzling beach on Zanzibar. On this side of the island, tidal variations determine what happens each day. They might limit your own swimming to the highs, but open up walks to the reef on the lows. We hope that your time with us on this beach, always conscious of the rustling of the East African Talls and the distant roar of the fringing reef, will tune out your worries of the world.

We first came to Zanzibar while we were expatriates in the Middle East. It was 1992, before electricity, tarmac or cell phone networks. We fell in love with Matemwe and proceeded with the very long process to secure some land, and eventually build a holiday home. When we retired in 2012, instead of going back to Kenya, we decided to make this our main home, but soon realized it was too big and far too precious to keep to ourselves. I’ve since made it into a home that I like to share with others. It makes me happy to welcome guests to experience the fantastic beach, food, hospitality and weather that Zanzibar has to offer. Karibuni Utupoa!
