On the outside a rustic cabin, right out of “Deliverance”. On the inside, a fully equipped cozy modern retreat overlooking the Margaree River and "mountains".
Margaree Forks is a great place to get away from it all, yet remain close to everything western Cape Breton has to offer.
I believe my happiest guests are those who are familiar with the camping lifestyle but now want something more comfortable.
As of 2022, the owners have moved in to their new home on the property. (see below)

The space
The Shackteau was my dream retirement fishing cabin. It was not designed to be an AirBnb. I have stayed there from April to November in complete comfort. Built-in electric baseboard heat means the cabin is comfortable in the cooler months. I do recommend bringing slippers if you visit during the spring and fall.
There is a slight slant to the cabin floor that I have repaired as much as possible. If you are not steady on your feet this might be a concern.
The cabin is equipped with all the cooking appliances and utensils you could need: stove, toaster, toaster oven and microwave oven. There are lots of pots and pans too. I provide coffee, tea as well as the many condiments and seasonings. A good bluetooth speaker is easy to pair with your device of choice. The wi-fi is the fastest available and remote workers have used it successfully for their work.
The veranda is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery and on a clear night the stars put on a full show.
Note: The rental is for two people, and possibly a pet. The convertible couch is intended for occasions when two guests sleep separately.
From 2022 guests will be sharing the property with us. If you require complete privacy you will need to look elsewhere. It’s difficult to reassure potential guests that we will give them the space they require and not intrude on their privacy. I will continue the guarantee I’ve offered to previous guests. If, when you arrive, or even at some point during your stay, you realize the arrangements are not suitable I will refund the balance of your payment (minus the Airbnb deduction, of course).

Where you’ll be

Nova Scotia, Canada

This is a rural setting. My neighbour is a farmer. There are two seasonal cabins down the lane, but out of sight. The view of the river and the hills has an almost magical effect on your mood and well being. It is stunning. There is a Co-op grocery/liquor store a short drive away, and a Library/Visitor Centre with free wi-fi at the Forks. No matter where you stay in Cape Breton everything a visitor would like to do will require driving. I believe Margaree Forks is the best location for a visitor who wants to do it all.

I'm a recently retired teacher. My wife, Wilma, manages an office with a forestry non-profit, and is about to retire. Beginning November 2016 I began looking for destinations for my wife and I to get away from our cold Canadian winters.
We have 2 children, our daughter lives in Brooklyn and works in an Art Gallery. Our son is studying in China.
I love to travel. I lead school groups to Europe. Fly Fishing for Atlantic Salmon is a passion. Nova Scotia, Quebec, Newfoundland/Labrador, Iceland and Norway have been on my list of locations visited.
Nature and photography is important-flowers, trees and birds.
Our family lived in Paris for a year when the children were in school. We understand that quality of life is more important than standard of living. My profile picture was taken on a trip to China with my son and daughter.

During your stay

The cabin is an owner-operated Airbnb, not managed by an agency. I like to be explicit about the workings of the cabin so I always welcome my guests in person. I also enjoy meeting new people. I’ll introduce you to the cabin and contents, ask about your plans, answer your questions, and may offer some suggestions to make your stay memorable. Hopefully you have done your homework before arriving, but I'm still happy to share my experience and opinions about Cape Breton—if you are interested.
Check-in and out times are posted in the listing but can be flexible based on the arrival and departure times of other guests. I will message you the day before your arrival with full driving directions, road work, etc. I also like to get an idea of when you expect to arrive.
If you contact us when you reach the Causeway (you will have good reception there) we will have an idea when to expect you. (A non-stop trip from the Causeway is normally a 1hr15min). Of course you’re welcome to stop and explore the area as you drive along.
As we are now living on the property, we are sensitive to, and will respect your reasons for staying. If you want maximum privacy just let us know that you're here to get away from things, or something to that extent. Don't worry about hurting our feelings.
I will continue the guarantee I’ve offered to previous guests. If, when you arrive, or even at some point during your stay, you realize the arrangements are not suitable I will refund the balance of your payment (minus the Airbnb deduction, of course).
