Where you’ll be

Sesimbra, Setúbal, Portugal

Very quiet and the best place to rest nearby Sesimbra.

Sesimbra is located in the vicinity of the Arrábida Natural Park, founded in 1976, with an approximate area of 10 800 hectares, protecting the Mediterranean-type maquis vegetation born of this microclimate with similarities to Adriatic regions, like Dalmatia.

The fauna is quite diverse, although it has undergone great changes since the 19th century. Until the beginning of the 20th century it was still possible to observe wolves, wild boars and deer. Among the current fauna are the wild cat (Felis silvestris), the fox (Vulpes vulpes), the hare (Lepus capensis), the bat, bonelli's eagle (Hieraetus fasciatus) and the bufo real (Bubo bubo) , the partridge (Alectoriz rufus) and the royal swift (Apus melba). In 2004, as has happened previously, a fire destroyed a significant part of the Park, which has slowly been recovering.
The beaches protected by the mountains, with calm and transparent waters, are popular with the inhabitants of Setúbal and Lisbon. Portinho da Arrábida, a bay with a small island, Anicha, which forms a natural harbor sheltered by the mountain is, along with Figueirinha Beach, one of the most popular in the region and Praia do Creiro, one of the largest beaches and with greater coastal extension. There are also Galapinhos, elected in 2017 as the best beach in Europe by the portal European Best Destinations, Galapos and Praia dos Coelhos. The nearest beach is the village of Sesimbra.
esimbra has a valuable built heritage, which preserves important moments of history and local culture.
From this group stand out the Medieval Castle, the Chapel of the Holy Spirit of the Mareantes, the Sanctuary of Cabo Espichel and the Fortress of Santiago. A script for the patrimony of the county does not exempt the passage by any of these monuments.
The Castle of Sesimbra is located on a hill 240 meters above sea level, with a privileged view over the sea and the mountains. Conquered by D. Afonso Henriques in 1165, it was classified as a national heritage in 1910 and still retains today the two essential elements of medieval fortification: the wall and the fortress.
In the interior you can visit the Church of Our Lady of the Castle, exemplary of popular Portuguese religious architecture, the Archeology Center of Sesimbra, which testifies to the human occupation in the territory, from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages, the Keep and the Documentation Center Rafael Monteiro. Descending to the village, the first mandatory stop is in the Chapel and Hospital of the Holy Spirit of the Mareantes, built in the fifteenth century.
With a baroque-style façade, the building is divided into two floors: the upper chapel, whose collection includes an important collection of Sacred Art, of which Our Lady of Mercy is highlighted, painting by Gregório Lopes, dated to the century XVI, and the old medieval hospital, on the lower floor, the only example of the fifteenth century in Portugal and one of the best preserved in Europe.
The Fortress of Santiago, next to the beach, is another of the points of great patrimonial interest. Built in the 19th century. XVII to defend the coast of the frequent attacks of pirates, received, in century. XVIII the military government of the region and the summer residence of the royal infantry.
The visit to the patrimony of Sesimbra is only complete with the passage by the Cape Espichel, where is located the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Cape, cult that dates back to 1410. The architectural complex includes the Hermitage of Memory, dating from the fifteenth century, the hostels, the water house and the aqueduct.
