Casa Joia was originally a small vineyard. It is extremely charming and rustic. We are nestled on the hillside in an area of outstanding natural beauty with uninterrupted views down to the Obidos Lagoon at the end of the garden.
The lagoon is home to a huge variety of water and wading birds, flamingos, storks, purple heron and curlews plus fish eels and shellfish. With one hectare of garden we offer a truly tranquil environment where normally the only sounds are from our feathered friends.

The space
Casa Roma, a very charming L shaped house within Casa Joia has a large sitting room with tiled working fireplace, a modern well equipped kitchen with oven, fridge/freezer, washing machine and microwave, and a comfortable dining room. A tiled staircase leads up to an open balcony. The three double bedrooms lead off the balcony. One double with en-suite shower room, one further double and one twin room, and a large house bathroom. We have antique iron beds with.... comfortable mattresses and quality bed lined with feather duvets/pillows.
There is a spacious outdoor terrace with large extending table and chairs.
The house is self catering and breakfast is not provided. Also check out our Old Farmhouse and Loft Studio.

Where you’ll be

Nadadouro, Leiria, Portugal

We are rural, but whilst not remote, transport is essential.
Nadadouro is the nearest village, approx 2km. It has two bars/cafes and a small but very good grocery shop......with fresh bread each morning.
The small resort of Foz do Arelho is approx 4km and is where the calm lagoon meets the wild Atlantic. It has a wonderful beach for water sports, cafes/bars/restaurants.
Caldas da Rainha the main town is 7/8km. It is a busy town with many shops, good large supermarkets, and a daily (incl Sunday) fruit and vegetable market in the main square. There is a wonderful park in the centre complete with boating lake, important sculpture and a museum. Good cafes in the park make it the perfect place to drink good coffee and watch the world go by.
Caldas is the home of the ceramic region in Portugal with an historic ceramic museum alongside the working pottery of Bordalo Pinheiro, who are famous for their highly decorated jugs/bowls/tableware.
Geographically we are very well situated with many interesting destinations within easy reach from as little as 15 mins to just over 1 hour away.

Retired and happy. I love all aspects of our natural world.......birds, trees, flowers. I'm a passionate gardener and adore my constant companion Roma, my little Italian Greyhound.
