Along the road which passes in front of the Shantidevi Ashram, you will see all the activity of everyday life: the comings and goings of women in multicoloured saris with loaded baskets on their heads, groups of school children in uniform, shepherds and their herds of buffalo, Monks on bicycles dressed in robes of saffron, grenadine, and orange. Graceful ladies pass by collecting seeds on which to survive, mingling with a slow, majestic elephant contentedly carrying his load while, all the time, the Dudwalla advertises his fresh buffalo yoghurt at the top of his voice, competing with the crescendo of the cuckoo's chant.
