Forcella is an area of Naples in the historic center, located close to via Duomo and between Spaccanapoli and Corso Umberto I.
The name of the district derives from its characteristic ipsilon (Y) junction which recalls the features of a saddle.
Forcella is the scenario of the first episode of Vittorio De Sica's Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, in which Adelina, Sophia Loren, to avoid prison for smuggling cigarettes, continues to get pregnant by her husband, Marcello Mastroianni. The film was inspired by a fact that really happened.
The Trianon theater and pizzeria are also located in Forcella. In front of the theater there is also the ancient Cippo a Forcella, stones once part of the Neapolis wall gate, hence the Neapolitan expression "Sta 'cosa s'arricorda' o Cipp 'à Furcella", to say that it is a very old thing.
The popular but safe neighborhood, full of food shops open until late, famous pizzerias and bars where to have an aperitif. 150 meters from Spaccanapoli, less than 400 from the port to visit the islands of Ischia, Capri and Procida or take the bus to Amalfi. 400 meters from Piazza Garibaldi where you can take the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento.
