    Travel and hospitality have undergone unprecedented changes during COVID-19, and we've been amazed by the adaptability of the host community. It’s been inspiring to witness hosts coming together to share how they’re updating their hosting practices to adjust to this new normal.

    The #HowToHost hashtag on Instagram has become a hub of advice and inspiration during these uncertain times, so we’ve compiled some of the best tips here. Read on for the highlights from Instagram, and be sure to follow #HowToHost for more ideas.

    Simplify your space

    Jessica in Parsonsfield, Maine, became a host on Airbnb during the pandemic, so she doesn’t know what it’s like to host outside of COVID-19. “I had imagined things a bit differently,” she says.

    Jessica, the host of Riverpine Retreat in Maine, posted on Instagram that she only leaves essentials like hand soap out in her bathroom to make it easier to clean during COVID-19.

    The bathroom she pictured with cute jars on shelves full of travel-sized soaps, shampoos, and cotton swabs now just includes hand soap and a box of facial tissue. “I kept everything very basic and easy to clean for the safety of my guests, and myself.” She also decided to put away items that are hard to sanitize—like games.

    Even though becoming a host wasn’t quite like she expected because of the global pandemic, Jessica’s been able to welcome guests to her riverside property with more confidence thanks to modifications like these.

    Adjust your cleaning routine

    While there have been a lot of changes during COVID-19 for host Diane in Boone, North Carolina, she says she’s found a few ways to adapt. In addition to blocking off two days after each booking to allow more time for cleaning, she’s also switched to duvet covers on beds and removed decorative pillows and throw blankets that can’t be easily cleaned.

    Leave supplies for guests

    Because cleanliness is so important, hosts are finding ways to help guests prevent the spread of the virus. Host Chrissie in Ely, Minnesota, has updated the amenities she offers at her cabin during COVID-19.

    One of the tips that host Chrissie in Minnesota mentioned on Instagram is having a hand sanitizer dispenser by the door.

    “We now have a hand sanitizer dispenser mounted at our keyless entry (with locally made hand sanitizer),” she says. “And along with our standard welcome bag treats, we provide guests with disposable masks, disinfectant wipes, and a bottle of hand sanitizer.”

    Offer thoughtful touches for remote workers

    How and where guests travel has changed during the pandemic—they’re staying nearby and many are working remotely—so it can be useful to remember this as you prepare for travelers.

    “We try to provide a little extra love for our guests because we hear that our cabin is their first venture out of town in awhile since quarantine,” says host Meg in Tiger, Georgia.
    Hosts like Meg in Georgia used the hashtag #HowToHost on Instagram to share tips for how they've adjusted their hosting practices during uncertain times.

    “Local honey, nice chocolate, or offering a mid-week cleaning refresh are little details that can really make an impact,” she says. “Since people are working from home, we try to accommodate specific questions regarding internet speed.”

    Make your space comfortable for remote workers

    Guests appreciate guidebooks to help them decide where to eat and what to do—which can be especially useful as communities implement different types of COVID-19 restrictions.

    Because of different needs now, host Meg also changed the types of activities she recommends to ones that can easily be done while maintaining social distance.

    Supporting her community is important to host Christine in Florida. She shared a photo of a chalkboard with local recommendations for guests as part of the #HowToHost conversation on Instagram.

    Support local businesses
    Host Christine in Zephyrhills, Florida, invites her guests to join her in supporting local small businesses. “It could be as simple as leaving positive reviews, ordering takeout, and/or patronizing while abiding by local requirements,” she says. “We created a chalkboard with some of our local faves and many more recommendations are provided to our guests in our guidebook.”
